Society History

Formation

In 1967, Philip Amey and Peter Earl who lived next door to each other had their bonfires destroyed before 5th November. They decided to build a bonfire between them and made 50 torches. They invited 12 friends to their celebrations and they all marched round the allotments at the back of Highdown Road and then watched the fireworks. The following year they went in search of advice about how to form a bonfire society. With advice they asked friends for help and support and between them they prepared for the 1968 celebrations. The celebrations included seventy members using six hundred torches in seven processions which included the St. Johns Ambulance Brigade Band. The main tableaux being the moon race between USA and USSR. On the 17th December that year the society held it's first meeting to elect a committee to organise the 1969 celebrations.
