Callander is a small Scottish Town, almost in the centre of Scotland and on the very edge of the highlands. It
has been a very popular visitor destination since Victorian times when the railways
brought the first tourists to see The Trossachs.
Queen Victoria was a regular visitor to a large house near Loch Venachar and famously
presented a gold sovereign to 'Muckle Kate', the landlady of a pub in Brig o' Turk. Muckle
Kate is Buried in Callander's old burial ground near the meadows.
Many visitors come to Callander just to see the famous woollen mills at Kilmahog just
half a mile north of the town.
The woollen
mills are just a small part of the shopping experience in Callander.
We have everything
from the Co-op to the local delicatessen, shoe shops to health food stores, in fact just
about every kind of shop you would ever want for a self catering holiday.
There are plenty things to see and do in and around Callander, here are a few suggestions:
These are all within easy driving distance of Callander.
Just a bit further afield, you can visit Glencoe, infamous for the massacre of the Clan
MacDonald, then go on to see Fort William and Ben Nevis - Britain's highest mountain and
take a cable car ride up Aonach Mor nearby.
You could then go on the famous steam train from Fort William to Mallaig with the ferry to
the isle of Skye beside the railway station.
Another day you could take the 90 minute drive to Oban then have an excursion by ferry and coach round the Isle of Mull and the Island of Iona.
These are just a handful of ideas - there are so many things to do and places to visit from Callander that you just won't want to leave!.
