Echoes in the Mind

You see the lonely man sat drinking
With the far-away look in his eyes
Do you wonder what he’s thinking?
Are his thoughts foolish or wise?

He’s thinking of a young boy at school
How he could not read or write a letter
Didn’t know rule, they said he was a fool
They were wrong now they know better.

How he dreamed of becoming a soldier
He knew he would never be an academic
He’s thinking of a time when he’s older
When he signed up as a driver mechanic

Trained as a mechanic, learnt to drive
A lesion learnt that proved its worth
Learnt about life and how to survive
No more a subject of others mirth.

He’s still a young man, not wise and old.
There was still time to run and have fun
He remembers a land so white and cold
Before going to a land hot under the sun.

To a distant land burnt by the suns glare
At times bombs and bullets filled the air
A driver on mobile patrol the going tough
Mistake and the consequents were rough

Remembering a night up country in June
On a mountain under the light of full moon
There’s a flash, crash and rattle like thunder
How the life he loved was torn asunder

No longer was he one of the best
The fighting must leave to the rest
For him began a new kind of fight
Battle with a lose of sound and sight

Learnt new skills, got on with his life
And in time he found himself a wife
To a Bride and Groom the memory strays
The home they made and the happy days

The love that he thought would never end
How he lost her to a false-hearted friend.
But as he stood alone like the mighty Oak
Not a word of his deep sorrow he spoke.

Of a loved daughter once held so dear
But sadly for him she will shed no tears
Has long known loneliness and the fears
How things have changed over the years

He’s still stands like the mighty Oak
For as long as there’s life there’s hope
So. Look behind those sad far away eyes
Think. Are his thoughts foolish or wise
