This updated list of Ipswich pubs now contains a various notes taken from one or two popular historic books and many comments sent to me by various people since the list has been published on the Internet. Credits have been given for all the sources of information where appropriate. The list has also been sorted by street name to help locate pubs geographically.
This is very much still work in progress and the list will still contain some errors and ommissions - one problem is the reuse of names which means that some old pubs were closed so that the licence (and the name) could be transfered to a new venture; street names have also changed in some instances. With over 380 pubs on the revised list it can be quite confusing. I will welcome any feed back on any of the listed pubs (either closed or still open).

Originally a 16th cent. merchants house. Must have converted to a pub after 1689 when only two licensed premises are recorded in St Mathews parish – White Lion (now Golden Lion) and Crown. Tudor doorway remains within remaining building with Jacobean workmanship. Pub also enjoyed a good reputation for the quality of its beers due in part to the perfectly balanced temperature of the cellar. The Old Ale was said to be particularly excellent. Throughout 19th cent. It was a popular mid-morning venue for doctors, lawyers and tradesmen. WILLIAM HY. TAYLOR (KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |

Conversion of former brewery offices into this pub created a large bar area with good views of the docks. The building was also once used as a residence for brewers. Two small but nicely furnished rooms either side of entrance provide space away from the bar and upstairs the Cardinal room is a function room which is available for private use. |

Harry Marney ran the pub for about 10 years until around 1916/18. Part of the building was a gymnasium where he trained local lads the art of boxing. Harry Marney was the landlords stage name. His real name was Harry Rednall. His son Macdonald (christened Macdonald Marney Rednall) later adopted Marney as his surname and also built up a very successful fish and chip business. In turn his son went on to built up the Mac Marney Refrigeration company still operating in Ipswich. |

ROBERT CARPENTER UNGLESS was the licencee of THE BULLS HEAD until his death (aged 38) on the 18th july 1840. The Ipswich Journal in their issue dated 25th July 1840 stated that he was for "many years landlord of the Bulls Head Inn, Ipswich" the 1851 census shows that Henry [harry] Ungless and his family were then in occupation. This pub stood just outside the town's former Cavalry barracks (built 1795) which were a particularly important aspect of the town during the Napoleonic wars but they were subsequently closed sometime during the late Victorian period and today the whole site is covered by both Geneva Road and Cecil Road. The Canteen was appartently popular with the troopers such as the Queens Bays, Hussars and Dragoons who were often seen on parade in the town esp.on Sunday mornings. John Thomas Olive (1779-1856) of Ipswich is listed as landlord in the 1823 Pigot's Directory of Ipswich. By the 1841 census he was at The Hare & Hounds. Olive had left the army c1812 after being a bandmaster in the Queens Bays. |

Famous coaching inn which was written about by Charles Dickens in Pickwick Papers. Dickens stayed at hotel in 1835 and was later threatened with libel action by the proprietor William Brooks. In early 19th cent. The inn was effectively a “terminus” for many coaches to London, Great Yarmouth or Norwich. Lord Nelson stayed here in Nov 1800 with Lord + Lady Hamilton. His reception was tremendous (after battle of Nile) and “enthusiastic citizens unharnessed the horses from the carriage and drew it through cheering crowds to the end of St Mathews St.” Earlier he had taken the opportunity to visit “Roundwood” the house his wife had purchased for him in Ipswich – but he never lived there. Rebuilt in 1890s to replace earlier hotel; Coaches once left from here to London, Norwich or Yarmouth. TRUST HOUSES LIMITED ( KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |
