This updated list of Ipswich pubs now contains a various notes taken from one or two popular historic books and many comments sent to me by various people since the list has been published on the Internet. Credits have been given for all the sources of information where appropriate. The list has also been sorted by street name to help locate pubs geographically.
This is very much still work in progress and the list will still contain some errors and ommissions - one problem is the reuse of names which means that some old pubs were closed so that the licence (and the name) could be transfered to a new venture; street names have also changed in some instances. With over 380 pubs on the revised list it can be quite confusing. I will welcome any feed back on any of the listed pubs (either closed or still open).

Originally a 16th cent. merchants house. Must have converted to a pub after 1689 when only two licensed premises are recorded in St Mathews parish – White Lion (now Golden Lion) and Crown. Tudor doorway remains within remaining building with Jacobean workmanship. Pub also enjoyed a good reputation for the quality of its beers due in part to the perfectly balanced temperature of the cellar. The Old Ale was said to be particularly excellent. Throughout 19th cent. It was a popular mid-morning venue for doctors, lawyers and tradesmen. WILLIAM HY. TAYLOR (KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |

Conversion of former brewery offices into this pub created a large bar area with good views of the docks. The building was also once used as a residence for brewers. Two small but nicely furnished rooms either side of entrance provide space away from the bar and upstairs the Cardinal room is a function room which is available for private use. |

Harry Marney ran the pub for about 10 years until around 1916/18. Part of the building was a gymnasium where he trained local lads the art of boxing. Harry Marney was the landlords stage name. His real name was Harry Rednall. His son Macdonald (christened Macdonald Marney Rednall) later adopted Marney as his surname and also built up a very successful fish and chip business. In turn his son went on to built up the Mac Marney Refrigeration company still operating in Ipswich. |

ROBERT CARPENTER UNGLESS was the licencee of THE BULLS HEAD until his death (aged 38) on the 18th july 1840. The Ipswich Journal in their issue dated 25th July 1840 stated that he was for "many years landlord of the Bulls Head Inn, Ipswich" the 1851 census shows that Henry [harry] Ungless and his family were then in occupation. This pub stood just outside the town's former Cavalry barracks (built 1795) which were a particularly important aspect of the town during the Napoleonic wars but they were subsequently closed sometime during the late Victorian period and today the whole site is covered by both Geneva Road and Cecil Road. The Canteen was appartently popular with the troopers such as the Queens Bays, Hussars and Dragoons who were often seen on parade in the town esp.on Sunday mornings. John Thomas Olive (1779-1856) of Ipswich is listed as landlord in the 1823 Pigot's Directory of Ipswich. By the 1841 census he was at The Hare & Hounds. Olive had left the army c1812 after being a bandmaster in the Queens Bays. |

Famous coaching inn which was written about by Charles Dickens in Pickwick Papers. Dickens stayed at hotel in 1835 and was later threatened with libel action by the proprietor William Brooks. In early 19th cent. The inn was effectively a “terminus” for many coaches to London, Great Yarmouth or Norwich. Lord Nelson stayed here in Nov 1800 with Lord + Lady Hamilton. His reception was tremendous (after battle of Nile) and “enthusiastic citizens unharnessed the horses from the carriage and drew it through cheering crowds to the end of St Mathews St.” Earlier he had taken the opportunity to visit “Roundwood” the house his wife had purchased for him in Ipswich – but he never lived there. Rebuilt in 1890s to replace earlier hotel; Coaches once left from here to London, Norwich or Yarmouth. TRUST HOUSES LIMITED ( KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |

stood somewhere on site which is now partly now covered by Crown & Anchor and was pulled down in about 1842. One18th cent. landlord of the ancient inn was a man called Selby who inherited £14500 from Lord Chedworthon the grounds that he “was in no wise related”. Apparently the nobelman was a known eccentric and had a “strong predeliction for the drama” and also left money to performers of the nearby Playhouse, which was built in the Griffin's former yard in 1728. |

The Ipswich Association Town football club first played at Brook Hall, Broomfield (opposite the pub) from Oct 1878 onwards and used a room in the pub for changing. Later they changed their name to Ipswich Town and eventually moved to Portman road. In early 20th cent. The nearby Apollo Gardens were a popular site for summer entertainments when a large marquee would be erected and summer theatre was performed. ALBERT EDWARD BYE( KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |

Leopard certainly existed before 1890. It's address for the period 1823-1887 (was 95 Tower Terrace). After this date it became 104 Crown Street. Note that the old Leopard had a second entrance on Clay Lane and this may also cause for some confusion about the pubs location in several sources. C18 23 - ???? W. In 1888 Dr JE Taylor said “perhaps the most notable part is the present tap room. The quay labourers sit over their beer in a carved-ceiled, oak panelled room, the mantel piece of which is good enough to lead to the sin of covetousness. Upstairs, the front room has a plastered ceiling, modelled in sections, with the Tudor rose as the chief ornament. The back room is evidently older than the front.”-sadly the panelling was removed in 1924; MRS MATILDA R. JARRETT ( KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |

Aparently it had a stuffed nightingale in a glass box inside. It was opposite the engineering works and had a front entrance and a back entrance. The beers were lined up on the bar so that as the factory hooter sounded the workers could go in the front door, drink their pint and exit to the street behind. Herbert Skeet ran the pub from 1872 to 1920. He ran the pub with his wife Elizabeth Crapnell. (Daughter of James Crapnell who ran the Pot of Flowers). Herbert died in 1920 at 48 years of age. He died of Neuritus, hepatic cirrhosis aseites and pulmonary oedema, therefore it looks like he drank himself to death. His wife continued to run the pub ( Kelly's 1925 and 1926 Mrs Elizabeth Skeet running Nightingale Pub) but in Kelly's 1926, 1927, 1929, and 1940 shows Henry Prior as the beer retailer at pub (apparently on 17 June 1925 Henry Prior, widowe +, retired civil servant married Elizabeth Skeet, widow, licensed victualler) Elizabeth skeet was more or less involved with the pub from 1906 to 1940. |

One of the oldest inns in town. The date 1707 on the front of the present building probably refers to alterations undertaken to reduce the first floor overhang. A perpetual fine of £2 per annum has been imposed on the house since 1664 when the landlord, John Parker gave the money to the parish poor to buy coals on St Thomas day. CHAS H. The Town Wagon was a weekly 16th cent. coach from here to London. One early proprietor Robert Lane, was the originator, builder and driver of the Ipswich-London stage-waggon. He was recognised and rewarded for his pioneering work by Elizabeth I who recorded in the great Court Book in 1582 that he had had the bestowal of the freedom of the borough upon him and the bestowal of the right to “have the only trade of wagons within the towne for a period of 10 years.” Jonas Chaplin was innkeeper here in 1851. Richard and Thomas Lane were still waggoners of the towne some 18 years later. Open between 1890-1912 |

Rev. C.E. White tells us it “Once had a picturesque appearance with its quaint bow windows, street posts and old gateway, the spandrals of which latter were ornamented with the wood carving of a dragon.” The spandrals are preserved and can now be seen adorning the entrance of Christchurch mansion. replaced by Suffolk House. Coaches once left from here to London, Norwich or Yarmouth. |

located on the south bank of the Orwell, right on the water on Bridge Street, immediately to the west of Stoke Bridge. It first appears in Ipswich borough records in 1562 during the reign of Elizabeth I (reigned 1558 - 1603) when the owner was a "Mr. MADOCKE" and it was noted "water at back gate". It appears not to have been a very large house at that time It was rebuilt in 1819 and from 1835 to 1873 was run by a Noah HAMBLING. In 1823/24, its owner/publican was a T. TAYLOR. It was torn down after September, 1924, along with the demolition of all the other timber-framed buildings in the immediate area when the concrete bridge and approaches still standing today were built (and completed in April, 1925). |

Originally a country inn which stood in some solitude. A toll-gate once stood just below (opposite to entrance to Christchurch park) and here all farmers coming into the town had to pay toll for their gigs and carts. Many however escaped payment of the “toll traverse” by stabling their horses at the Woolpack's then extensive stables and parking their vehicles in Westerfeild and Tuddenham roads causing congestion and chaos. Later after the toll-gate closed the stables were converted into a slaughter house. M JOHN ALFRED HOWARD ( KELLYS DIRECTORY 1937) |
