Recently I have been re-compiling and updating a fairly comprehensive list of all the lost i.e. closed pubs of Ipswich (relating to the last 125 years or so). Some of the details already gathered are now published below. The time period chosen seems particularly apt as it begins just after a period of rapid growth in the total number of outlets. Relaxation in licensing laws had encouraged many new beer houses and public bars to open in the 1850s and compete with the well established coaching inns and taverns. In fact the total number of outlets open at any one time has probably been in slow decline ever since.

During late Victorian times prosperous and industrial towns like Ipswich were expanding fast. The old (medieval) town limits were no longer relevant as new housing estates on green-field sites sprang-up to replace the cramped town squalor. During such expansion many licenses held on older public houses were surrendered (or transferred) to help ensure that new public bars on the new housing estates were permitted. The narrow town centre streets were widened initially to accommodate electric trams - later trolly busses and the private motor car - but also causing the loss of many fine and historic buildings (including public bars) and the re-fronting of many others such as the Great White Horse and the Plough.

The old town centre street plan was also subjected to numerous road improvement schemes. During the 1930s, 1950s and 1960s large scale building programmes such as Greyfriars, Civic drive, various dock access systems, and a new Civic College replaced whole areas of earlier street plans and caused more loss of public houses. Today the main threat to remaining pubs is increasingly social with recent trends for large town centre bars, night-clubs and food orientated venues rather than support of the "back street" boozer - undoubtedly we will see more closures unless there is more desire to support your local!

PLEASE NOTE: This list is not yet definitive (despite numbering over 260 entries) but rather it is an on going project. I would be very grateful if anyone who has information (or photographs or newspaper clippings) relating to any local pub events or closures could send me a copy (or a high resolution scan) to help complete more of the database - credits will be given in future publications. Details of pub owners, dates of closure, and any prominent or last known landlord (or landlady) are particularly useful. You can either post information to me (via address given on inside front cover) or e-mail postmaster@ipswichcamra.com.

Finally I would like to give many thanks to anyone who has previously compiled such a list (including

R Dewhurst, S Slegg, B Cullum and G Potter) their efforts have been my starting point and my inspiration for this project.
