A new campaign to put an end to the Great British beer rip off was launched in the House of Commons in December. A new cross party Parliamentary Motion is calling on Government to protect consumers from short beer measures in the forthcoming Weights and Measures legislation, by defining a pint of beer as 100%. liquid. The current law fails to protect consumers from short beer measures, as a result - 9 in 10 pints are currently served as short measure - 1 in 4 pints are over 5% short. Short measure already costs consumers £400 million a year, or over £1 million a day. MP's have also expressed concern at Government proposals to redefine a pint as "not less than 95% liquid". This would give dishonest licensees a green light to short change consumers. Over 15 million beer drinkers lose out because of short measure. "Are you being caught short? Short Measure Feb 2005 |
