Caxton Social Club wins EA club of Year award
In late October, members of CAMRA (The campaign for Real Ale) joined Paul Sturman and other locals at the Caxton Social Club in Beccles to celebrate the success in winning East Anglia Regional Club of the Year 2008, a CAMRA award which is now being presented to members clubs in recognition of their commitment to real ale. Since March 2005 it has been in the capable hands of Club Steward, Paul Sturman, who said “"The sales of real ales have become so popular that we have installed extra handpumps for increased demand. I am pleased to accept the award and thank North East Suffolk branch of CAMRA for nominating the club."
Andrea Briers, Regional Director for East Anglia said “The Caxton Social Club demonstrates that members clubs can be successful selling real ale, and I would encourage any club considering offering real ale to their members to give it a try."

New season of Local Pub History Meetings:
(Landlord Ady Smith at the Dove Street Inn in Ipswich is organising a pub history group with one common aim, to collect as much information on Suffolk Pubs as possible before it is lost forever)
Meetings take place on the second Monday of the month, with a summer break between June and August. For more information contact Ady on 01473 211270 or just join in at the next meeting.
|
|
Forthcoming dates are:
* October 13th
* November 10th
* December 8th
To add a bit more into these relaxed yet informative meetings, it is also intended to bring in a guest speaker (when possible) to add more information to the project.

Ipswich Dove Street Inn is presented
with more awards (July 2008)

|
|
It was recently Peter Gagen’s very pleasant responsibility, as Ipswich & East Suffolk branch chairman, to present both Ady Smith and Karen Beaumont with two more awards as they were not just local branch Pub of the year for the third year running – an unprecedented series of such awards in the branches history – and they were also voted Suffolk CAMRA’s Pub of
the Year for the second time.
They narrowly won this award in late May after a three way run-off against the Thurston Fox & Hounds and the Lowestoft Norman Warrior.
The Dove is currently competing in the next round of the competition and is up against Bedford Wellington Arms (Bedfordshire), Grandsen Chequers (Cambridgeshire), Southminster Station Arms (Essex), Heronsgate Land
of Liberty, Peace & Plenty (Hertfordshire), Norwich King's Head (Norfolk) and we like to wish them best wishes in the competition.

It is now over 10 years since the local branches published a definitive guide to Suffolk pubs. A lot has changed since then and in an attempt to update our knowledge and share it with others we have now launched a new website. If you find any information on this website which is either out of date or in error please let us know and it will then be updated. |
