Old Inns and Beer Houses of Bury St Edmunds

Written by local man, Gerry Nixon, this book was published by West Suffolk CAMRA in mid 1996. The 96 page book charts, street by street, a comprehensive study of principally 18th and 19th century life in the ancient market town. Colourfully written, using extracts from period magazines and newspapers we learn a little of the characters that owned and utilised the towns licenced premises during their most popular and sucessful period to date. Occasional quotes from the mysterious "Q" - the annonymous correspondant to the Bury Post in 1791, seek to enlighten several minds once again. His observations of the changing town and pub-trade of the late 18th Century having a familiar ring. Illustrated with over 20 photographs and adverts you will pick the book up time and time again to re-live some of the more lively moments and compare the descriptions with the more sedate "townscape" we now find. (RRP £6.95)
