TAKING CARE OF YOUR TREE

You can prolong the life of your tree by taking care of it during the festivities. A little care and attention should help stop it drying out and dropping all its needles.

- FRED SMITH's UNIQUE TEN POINT TREE CARE PLAN -

1.
If the tree has no root - ensure that it is fresh cut i.e. branches at bottom of tree are not already very dry and brittle.
2.
Once home cut-off about 20mm from the bottom of tree to ensure that the final cut is very fresh.
3.
ALTERNATIVELY if the tree still has a root system then it is best to pot it immediately into fresh moist earth.
4.
Make sure the pot being used is big enough to support the tree adequately and is watertight.
5.
Regularly water the tree - stand un-potted or rootless trees into shallow water whilst still outside the house.
6.
Keep your tree outside the house in a cool place until it is needed indoors - best to leave this until all the other festive decorations are going-up.
7.
When taking your tree indoors, try to place it away from direct heat - i.e. coolest place possible - in a hall or near a window.
8.
Continue to water the tree regularly - give it at least half a pint EVERY day (or more) especially in a very warm room.
9.
Remove the tree as soon as possible after the festivities (keep it indoors for a maximum of 4 weeks).
10.
If your tree has a good root and you wish to plant it in the garden after Christmas then first put it into a shed - to help it cool down and re-aclimatise - for a couple of weeks - and then keep regularly watering the tree until the following autumn, to ensure it is well re-established into the ground.

This Christmas you can visit us to select your own Christmas tree - bring a spade and dig your own - or alternatively there is always a very large selection of ready dug and precut trees to choose from.

Norway Spruce
(Picea abies)
Nordmann Fir
(Abies nordmanniana)

Blue Spruce
(Picea pungens glauca)

Scotch Pine
( Pinus sylvestris)
Can grow up to 40m (130 feet) or more in height - dark green needles which are rectangular in cross-section and blunt at the tip - cones are 100-150mm (4-7 inches) long - typically takes 10 years to produce a 2m (6 feet) high tree.
This is an excellent tree with very good needle retention. It has soft, deep green foliage, smooth grey bark and a good triangular tree shape. But it takes longer to grow than the Spruce variety and so it costs a little more
Also non-drop with a good natural shape and is distinguished by a striking blue-green (almost electric blue) foliage. It also has a distinctive 'pine' scent. The needles are very sharp so take care with handling it.
We only have a few of these large, slow growing trees. Needles are 50mm (2 inches) long and grow in pairs, blue green in colour - young trees are conical in shape but as they mature many lower branches are lost making the tree's profile increasingly flatter - lots of resin in a mature tree.
