East Witton

East Witton is situated close to Middleham, famous for its horse racing stables and splendid Norman Castle, which was the seat of Richard III. Jervaulx Abbey, the picturesque remains of a Cistercian Monastery, is only a short half hours walk from the cottage. The Lake District, Harrogate, York and the Yorkshire coastal resorts are within easy reach by car

Located towards the bottom end of Wensleydale, East Witton is  about 15 minutes by car from Masham, (the locals pronounce it Masam) home of the  well known Theakston's Brewery. You can try a pint of Theakston's Best Bitter, amoungst other real ales, at the Blue Lion pub (above right) which is opposite Rookery  Cottage. The picture above left was taken circa 1920's and clearly shows  Rookery Cottage on the left. The village itself has not changed that much since  those days. The pub has two dinning-rooms as well as a bar area and tap room and is a great place to recover after a hard day's walking. There is a beer garden and a large car park at the rear
