US presents false information to Security Council

"When we heard Powell citing our Chechen network suspects as the [Iraqi] terror link directly to al-Zarqawi everyone's mouth dropped open.... Al-Zarqawi hasn't been connected to these networks through material evidence or testimony. He doesn't even seem to lurking at the boundaries.... Frankly, no one wanted to risk creating trouble by saying anything about Powell's report [to the UN Security Council on 5th February] at that time. Today, relations between [the US and France] couldn't get any worse - so why not [raise objections now]?"

The diplomat, John Brady Kiesling, the political counselor at the United States Embassy in Athens, said in his resignation letter [to Colin Powell], 'Our fervent pursuit of war with Iraq is driving us to squander the international legitimacy that has been America's most potent weapon of both offense and defense since the days of Woodrow Wilson.'..."

"Hussein Kamel, the highest-ranking Iraqi official ever to defect from Saddam Hussein’s inner circle, told CIA and British intelligence officers and U.N. inspectors in the summer of 1995 that after the gulf war, Iraq destroyed all its chemical and biological weapons stocks and the missiles to deliver them... Kamel told his Western interrogators that he hoped his revelations would trigger Saddam’s overthrow. But after six months in exile in Jordan, Kamel realized the United States would not support his dream of becoming Iraq’s ruler after Saddam’s demise. He chose to return to Iraq—where he was promptly killed... Kamel’s revelations about the destruction of Iraq’s WMD stocks were hushed up by the U.N. inspectors, sources say... NEWSWEEK has obtained the notes of Kamel’s U.N. debrief, and verified that the document is authentic. "

".... on Wednesday (2/26/03), a complete copy of the Kamel transcript-- an internal UNSCOM/IAEA document stamped 'sensitive'-- was obtained by Glen Rangwala, the Cambridge University analyst who in early February revealed that Tony Blair's 'intelligence dossier' was plagiarized from a student thesis. This transcript can be seen at http://www.fair.org/press-releases/kamel.pdf.... Kamel's defection has been cited repeatedly by George W. Bush and leading administration officials as evidence that 1) Iraq has not disarmed; 2) inspections cannot disarm it; and 3) defectors such as Kamel are the most reliable source of information on Iraq's weapons... The Kamel story is a bombshell that necessitates a thorough reevaluation of U.S. media reporting on Iraq, much of which has taken for granted that the nation retains supplies of prohibited weapons. (See FAIR Media Advisory, 'Iraq's Hidden Weapons: From Allegation to Fact,' 2/4/03.) Kamel's testimony is not, of course, proof that Iraq does not have hidden stocks of chemical or biological weapons, but it does suggest a need for much more media skepticism about U.S. allegations than has previously been shown.... So far, according to a February 27 search of
the Nexis database, no major U.S. newspapers or national television news
shows have picked up the Newsweek story."

Whatever the real merits of the case against Iraq, again and again the administration has cited evidence that turns out to be misleading or worthless - 'garbage after garbage after garbage,' according to one U.N. official...Can we run a foreign policy in the absence of trust? The administration apparently thinks it can use threats as a substitute. Officials have said that they expect undecided Security Council members to come around out of fear of being on the 'wrong' side. And Mr. Bush may yet get the U.N. to acquiesce, grudgingly, in his war. But even if he does, we shouldn't delude ourselves: whatever credibility we may gain by invading Iraq is small recompense for the trust we have lost around the world."

"I am writing you to submit my resignation from the Foreign Service of the United States and from my position as Political Counselor in U.S. Embassy Athens, effective March 7... this Administration has chosen to make terrorism a domestic political tool, enlisting a scattered and largely defeated Al Qaeda as its bureaucratic ally [see 'What war against terrorism?', nlpwessex]. We spread disproportionate terror and confusion in the public mind, arbitrarily linking the unrelated problems of terrorism and Iraq. The result, and perhaps the motive, is to justify a vast misallocation of shrinking public wealth to the military and to weaken the safeguards that protect American citizens from the heavy hand of government. September 11 did not do as much damage to the fabric of American society as we seem determined to so to ourselves.... Why does our President condone the swaggering and contemptuous approach to our friends and allies this Administration is fostering, including among its most senior officials... When our friends are afraid of us rather than for us, it is time to worry. And now they are afraid. Who will tell them convincingly that the United States is as it was, a beacon of liberty, security, and justice for the planet?... I am resigning because I have tried and failed to reconcile my conscience with my ability to represent the current U.S. Administration."

"The Project for the New American Century [PNAC, supported by key members of the current Bush administration including Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz] seeks to establish what they call 'Pax Americana' across the globe. Essentially, their goal is to transform America, the sole remaining superpower, into a planetary empire by force of arms. A report released by PNAC in September of 2000 entitled 'Rebuilding America's Defenses' codifies this plan, which requires a massive increase in defense spending and the fighting of several major theater wars in order to establish American dominance. The first has been achieved in Bush's new budget plan, which calls for the exact dollar amount to be spent on defense that was requested by PNAC in 2000. Arrangements are underway for the fighting of the wars.... The first step towards the establishment of this Pax Americana is, and has always been, the removal of Saddam Hussein and the establishment of an American protectorate in Iraq. The purpose of this is threefold: 1) To acquire control of the oilheads so as to fund the entire enterprise; 2) To fire a warning shot across the bows of every leader in the Middle East; 3) To establish in Iraq a military staging area for the eventual invasion and overthrow of several Middle Eastern regimes, including some that are allies of the United States... Cheney became involved with PNAC officially in 1997, while still profiting from deals between Halliburton and Hussein. One year later, Cheney and PNAC began actively and publicly agitating for war on Iraq. They have not stopped to this very day.... France and Germany do not oppose Bush because they are cowards, or because they enjoy the existence of Saddam Hussein. France and Germany stand against the Bush administration because they intend to stop this Pax Americana in its tracks if they can. They have seen militant fascism up close and personal before, and wish never to see it again. Would that we Americans could be so wise."
