New electoral system for
Euro elections 1999
For the first time in a national poll
proportional representation will apply to the European
elections in the UK in 1999. This represents the
fulfilment of one aspect of the Natural Law Party's
manifesto objective to enable all political parties to be
represented in government according to their level of
support (the current system creates a situation of one
party rule even where the leading party does not have a
majority of the vote; the Labour party, for example, won
nearly 2/3rd of the seats in the 1997 General Election
with only 45% of the vote and now holds all government
ministerial positions).
UK
Government says "yes" to proportional
representation for 1999 Euro elections (July 1997)
The Natural Law Party congratulates the Labour Party
on its courage in introducing this first step in changing
the system, and on its other efforts to encourage greater
moves towards "consensus politics".
An end to negative voting
The previous electoral system of "first past the
post" has encouraged negative voting where people
vote on the basis of trying to prevent a particular party
from winning a particular parliamentary constituency.
What is
proportional representation? - click here
Because , under the proportional representation
system, each vote for a political party makes a direct
contribution to the number of seats it holds in
parliament voters are much more willing to vote for the
party they most identify with rather than vote tactically
simply to limit the success of a party that they don't
approve of.
