Mark Griffiths, West Dorset prospective parliamentary candidate for the Natural Law
Party at the next general election has put forward a four point plan for maintaining
Britains sovereignty in Europe without damaging its trade and cultural relations
with other member states. The Natural Law Partys unique strategy for Europe is based
on several firm commitments including:
· no further transfers of national sovereignty to Brussels
· no membership of a single currency (EMU)
· the creation of a voluntary "common" currency in Europe which would run
along side the pound and other national currencies
· developing improved cooperation in Europe on the basis of genuinely coherent
international relations rather than through bureaucratic regulation and domination by
special interests
"Europe will be a key issue at the General Election. The Government is not saying
what it will do, whilst the opposition is saying it would have a referendum. In either
case the electorate does not know what it will end up with if it supports either of these
parties. The attraction of the Natural Law Partys position is that it represents a
clear commitment to voters before the election, and it solves the key issue - the conflict
between the need to preserve national sovereignty whilst at the same time ensuring fully
cooperative relations between member states," says Mr Griffiths.
FREEDOM OF CHOICE FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
The common currency proposed by the NLP would be available in all member states but
its use would be entirely at the option of individual citizens and local businesses. It
would function as a voluntary alternative to national currencies which would remain in
place at all times.
However, the Natural Law Party believes that its most important contribution to the
future of Europe is its unique programme to create "coherence" in the collective
consciousness of member states by establishing a large group of Yogic Flyers in Brussels.
According to Mr Griffiths a similar project was applied for a two month experimental
period in 1993 in Washington DC. The project was monitored by an independent board of six
Universities and the District of Columbia Police Department. Published results for the two
month study showed a 20% reduction in crime, a dramatic increase in the popularity of the
Clinton administration and a sudden end to months of political deadlock in Congress
between the Republicans and Democrats.
"If we want constructive output from the political system then it has to be on
the basis of creating the right atmosphere in which genuine cooperation can take place
without one element of society feeling it is under threat from another. The results from
the Washington study show that this can be achieved quickly and easily, provided we are
prepared to take a radically different approach which deals with the real causes of
national and international discord and not just the symptoms," adds Mr Griffiths.
