Wessex News Release
October 1997
Opening
The regional leader of the Natural Law Party, Chartered Surveyor Mark Griffiths, has
hailed the new opening of a unique private health centre in Bournemouth as a breakthrough
in the promotion of preventative natural medicine in the Wessex region. Mr Griffiths, the
NLP candidate for West Dorset in the General Election, was speaking at the inaugural
opening of the Wessex Maharishi Ayur-Veda Health Centre at Oak Hall, Boscombe Manor, in
Bournemouth. The health centre is the first of its kind to be established in the region
and will serve patients from Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight as well as visitors
from further afield.
Unique form of preventative medicine
The new health centre will specialise in both residential and out-patient natural
health care services based on the ancient system of preventative medicine know as
"Ayur-Veda", a name derived from a Sanskrit term meaning "Science of
Life". Following consultation with a qualified Doctor experienced in both modern and
traditional Ayur-Vedic medicine health centre visitors will be offered a variety of
natural health regimes covering dietary recommendations, aroma and sound therapies, herbal
detoxification treatments, pulse diagnosis, stress management techniques and lifestyle
advice.

According to health centre Director, Colin Beckley, "Ayur-Veda is the worlds
oldest system of natural medicine and is rapidly increasing in popularity because of its
ability to deal both with existing conditions and the prevention of future health
problems, with none of the damaging side effects associated with drug based modern
medicine."
NHS must switch to preventative approach
The promotion of Ayur-Vedic medicine forms the central plank of the Natural Law
Partys current campaign to divert the National Health Service away from a system
which is inherently wasteful and expensive, and whose primary focus is the treatment of
disease after it has arisen, towards one which is principally preventative in its
approach.
" A growing body of research published in some of the worlds leading
scientific journals confirms that the Ayur-Vedic approach to medicine is a highly cost
effective way of eliminating major causes of ill-health in society such as heart failure,
cancer, and stress related disorders - as well as dealing with the more minor but often
persistent problems of personal and community health. At a time when the NHS is coming
under immense pressure we are very keen to demonstrate the value of this approach to
promoting good health in the community, and the opening of the Maharishi Ayur-Vedic health
centre in Bournemouth provides an ideal opportunity for people from all over Wessex to
experience its benefits directly for themselves. It is vital that we move towards a system
of health based on more natural and preventative values," says Mr Griffiths.

Party conference health initiative
At this weeks party conference the Natural Law Party has launched a national
campaign to establish similar health centres across the whole of the UK in a bid to
demonstrate that there are reliable cost effective alternatives to the crisis in health
care currently being experienced in the National Health Service.
