Campaign Launch Statement

Royal Hotel, Winchester 11th November 1997
(Gerald Napper, Rosemary Barry and Deputy Party Leader Peter Warburton)
Firstly, I would like to explain to you why I am standing for the Natural Law Party.
Having eschewed politics for many years, regarding it as a dull lacklustre subject mostly
discussed by people whose party colours were either inherited through the family's red
arteries or blue veins - or acquired through social position, I suddenly realised that
politics is a subject which should concern every citizen.
I immediately recognised that some Truth was being offered to me when a NLP leaflet
dropped through my door during the 1995 Eastleigh By-Election. It became clear to me that
I was right not to expect real solutions to problems to be provided by any government who
will not address the root of society's dis-ease. Undoubtedly, the root of such dis-ease
lies in the high stress level of the individuals within our nation. This is a world-wide
problem.
When I was about 17 I declared to my family that the only way that I could change the
world was to change myself. I have spent many years exploring the world, its ideas,
philosophies and have consciously and unconsciously re-shaped myself.
We have a national health system which clicks in when people have reached the last
stages of disease because there is no real understanding of the early warning signs and
how to rectify them. The health service is in the pockets of highly competitive
pharmaceutical companies whose records contain disasters such as the Thalidomide tragedy,
yet we blindly keep pursuing this unnatural course.
Constantly, we fight against Nature's way. I need hardly refer to the many thoughtless
acts which have led to us now blithely discussing 'the greenhouse effect', 'global
warming', 'acid rain' etc.
May I outline the problems within our society as I see them: (later I will explain how
our innovative policies can solve problems right across the board) Our system fails to
successfully impart proper human values into the people. The youth of today emerge from
broken homes, emotionally battered, seeking purely material goals and prey to drug abuse,
petty crime etc.
Now we have the horror of the 'genetic engineering' of our foodstuffs. This could be
the ULTIMATE VIOLATION of Natural Law, rendering our ecology totally out of balance and
the health of humans in real jeopardy. Already 37 people have died as a result of such
genetic tampering. What will it take to make us stop and think?
Our prison system creates a stressful melting pot in which criminal tendencies are
intensified, so that the rate of recidivism increases unchecked.
We sell arms abroad, commanding about 25% of that market making us the second largest
arms exporter in the world. We sell these weapons of destruction knowing that the lives of
innocent people may be erased through their use.
We continue expanding our cities creating areas of concentrated stress where crime,
intolerance and rage flourish.
Whilst I wish the recently appointed government every success, I should point out that
already the 'honeymoon period' is drawing to a close. Already, I am hearing people say
that they had expected real change with this new government but they are horrified to find
the same repeating pattern.
The Natural Law Party does have this knowledge. We propose to implement
scientifically-tested and proven measures which will alleviate society's stress at both
the personal and collective level.
What we need for a new government is NEW knowledge - a new way to deal with the issues
that I have just outlined.
Happiness should be a prevailing human condition. A person who is not feeling inwardly
fulfilled or able to exploit his or her potential is not a happy person. A person who
cannot find inner peace is not a happy person. A person whose health is less than perfect
cannot be a truly happy individual.
So, what are WE going to do about it?!
Let me begin with the areas that concern me most:
EDUCATION
The Natural Law Party will introduce teaching methods which will not only increase a
child's creativity but also expand a child's IQ. By teaching children how to eliminate
stress from their lives they will literally flower and become whole, well-balanced human
beings. We will introduce the Transcendental Meditation programme (which is the most
comprehensively researched programme for expanding consciousness) for teachers and
students alike.
With the heightened awareness that such an expansion brings, our youth will have more
respect for themselves and others, along with a developed sense of morality and true
values. High self-esteem brings the very best out in all people and will enable our young
to positively develop their natural talents in a fostering atmosphere.
The NLP will promote the use of all aspects of Information Technology to make study and
learning more effective. We will encourage, in every possible way, students to remain in
education until at least 21 years of age. Perhaps controversially, we believe in separate
education for girls and boys up to college level. Research has shown that boys and girls
do perform better in separate secondary schools. We will offer courses to school leavers
and university graduates to prepare them for the working world by developing such
qualities as: alertness, self-sufficiency, resistance to stress, orientation towards
positive values, and support of Natural Law.
Since problems arise from the violation of Natural Law we will encourage new
professions to guide the various aspects of society in accordance with Natural Law, such
as new systems of architecture and town planning. These new courses will encourage
participants to study and directly experience nature's intelligence through awareness of
the Constitution of the Universe.
These new professions will teach the population how to bring their lives in harmony
with Natural Law.
Children will be taught a simple method by which they can monitor their health through
pulse-reading. Any imbalances can be easily and naturally rectified.
This leads me nicely to another major area of personal interest:
HEALTH
The Natural Law Party will bring in a natural, proven, prevention-oriented health care
system which in a few years will beneficially change the state of the nation's health and
reduce by 50% the spending in that area.
High spending in itself is not a criterion by which we can measure or expect good
health. The US has the highest per capita spending on health of anywhere in the world and
yet it has the lowest levels of health in the whole of the developed world.
The Prince of Wales in 1982, at the 150th Anniversary of the British Medical
Association highlighted the monopoly of allopathic physicians in these words:
'One of the less attractive traits of various professional bodies and institutions is
the ingrained suspicion and outright hostility which can exist towards anything unorthodox
or unconventional'.
'Western medicine has failed the patient', says Dr Richard Horton, Editor of the
Lancet, in the Observer magazine 9/11/97.
By introducing Ayurvedic Medicine, a completely natural and holistic approach to
health, we can bring people into complete accord with nature.
In fact, when you examine all the elements that go together to make a society, you
find, quite naturally, that they are all interconnected and interdependent. Consequently,
our view of government is holistic and addresses every facet of the nation's life by
tackling things not only at the level of collective consciousness but also through the
encouragement of the balanced evolution of the individual.
Violation of the laws of nature disrupts the connection between the body and its inner
intelligence, creating stress and illness. The production of healthy food through
pollution-free sustainable farming is a necessary component of good health. Architecture,
sympathetically aligned, proportioned, and built with natural materials, is another. There
are many others.
Since, at our Press Conference, we are honoured to have here with us the Deputy Leader
of the Natural Law Party, Peter Warburton, and other Natural Law Party representatives
from the Wessex Region, I would like to give them the opportunity to speak at length on
the solutions for the other various subjects I touched on earlier: Crime, Genetic
Engineering, Defence, Agriculture etc.
