Mr Bush, Mr Blair:
Either you are for World Peace, or you are against it

What peace-loving people can do to stop the collapse of global security

ZURICH, Switzerland (Reuters) - International public opinion opposes a
massive U.S. military strike to retaliate for attacks on America by
hijacked aircraft, according to a Gallup poll in 31 countries whose
results were released Friday.

"But President Bush went further. Not only would the terrorists themselves be hunted down and put out of business, but also those who supported, armed and funded them. Fine. So where has the main support, funding and weapon-source for the IRA been? I am afraid the answer is the United States."
Frederick Forsyth, Wall St Journal, 21 September 2001

"The cynical purpose of declaring war on terrorism, like the abortive 'war on drugs', is to silence such critics [of American support for terrorism] and harness emotion to the cause of policy. It puts reason in quarantine. We should therefore be aware how thin is the veneer of democratic culture."
Simon Jenkins, London Times, 19 September 2001, "Christians should not charge into 'holy war'"

"Women didn't respond in the same way as men. For women the extent of the horror.... demanded that we ask questions..... Unfocused hysteria forced many last week to take refuge in the frightening, false, irrational certainty of a madman, which brooks no argument. Yet perhaps, in the space between [....] the awed silence of women and the weird assuredness of men who rule the West that they know the answers (when they don't even know the questions) - perhaps, somewhere there, might conceivably lie the answer to last week's attacks."
ALICE MILES, London Times, 19 September 2001, "Men are from Mars, women are from Earth"

22 September 2001

The front page of the London Times today reports that hospitals throughout Britain have been ordered to prepare for a "mass casualty incident" on the scale of the American assault, including casualties from biological attack. In March 2000 guidelines, in the form of a restricted document, were first circulated to hospitals in the UK to prepare for biological war.

The Times also reports that Civil Defence experts in Germany have indicated that "cold war bunkers under Berlin might be reopened if terrorists deployed biological and chemical weapons". At the beginning of September the BBC reported warnings from a former UK government chief scientist that the world is under threat of attack from genetically modified viruses.   Following the subsequent events in America clearly the situation is now perceived by many as desperate.

Since our post on 16 September advocating a new paradigm for global security we have received various mails from concerned individuals and peace groups around the world including post concerning "what can we do?".

We have already forwarded a peace petition to our subscribers, and in fact we include a link to another below which we encourage people to complete. But these seeds of peace will only sprout if they are sown in fertile ground. It is vital that humanity now makes every effort to provide the ground conditions on which the tree of World Peace can blossom.

We therefore invite all peace-loving people across the world to support the project to create a 'Global Country of World Peace'.  This is the most ambitious, practical and scientifically 'evidence based' peace project on the planet that we are aware of. Its development had already begun prior to 11 September but now its importance takes on even greater significance and urgency. It must be brought to fruition as quickly as possible.

In our opinion support for this project is the single most effective action that citizens of the world can take to avert the current global security crisis and establish genuine world peace. Without it, all the various and very necessary peace petitions, vigils, and demonstrations, are going to encounter deaf ears and hard hearts.

As we emphasised in our 16 September post: "On the 11 September 2001 the world changed. The time for 'conservative' thinking is over."   We all have the opportunity now to speak out for world peace, but more importantly we now have the chance to act.

Please visit the web site of this remarkable project for the future of humanity, and take whatever action you feel inspired to take.

If indeed you do feel inspired, please forward this mail to as many people as you can including politicians, and other societal decision makers and community leaders. As you will see from the article below in today's London Guardian people are becoming less shy of discussing this approach in public.

Meditation is path to peace, Mozambique leader says

Former Marxist guerrilla turned president spreads the word of the Beatles' guru to his ministers and the military

James Astill in Maputo
Guardian

Saturday September 22, 2001

President Joaquim Alberto Chissano of Mozambique is one of Africa's more enlightened leaders. Twice a day, he tries to attain pure consciousness through transcendental meditation (TM).

The president discovered TM, the teaching of the Beatles' guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in 1992, shortly before the end of Mozambique's 16-year guerrilla war. It was no coincidence.

"First I started the practice of transcendental meditation myself, then introduced the practice to my close family, my cabinet of ministers, my government officers and my military," Mr Chissano, a former Marxist bush-fighter, is on record as saying in literature published by Maharishi devotees. "The result has been political peace and balance in nature in my country."

Said to originate in India's ancient Vedic tradition, TM is based on the theory that stress is the cause of all evil. Yogic flyers, its most advanced practitioners, decrease environmental stress by tapping into pure, or universal, consciousness; thus righting the balance in natural law. Essentially, this involves moving in a series of supposedly gravity-defying, cross-legged bounds while meditating.

Best results are seen when approximately 8,000 yogic flyers gather in one place. This produces "the Maharishi effect", described as an "upsurge in harmony and social coherence enveloping the Earth".   Disciples claim that when such "coherence-building groups" have met in the past - often in California where the Maharishi was for a long time based - conflicts in Africa and the Middle East died down measurably.

Meditate

Maharishi's theory of invincible defence is related to this. Once a "prevention wing" of yogic flyers is formed within an army, Maharishi says, "military power is brought in alliance with the invincible power of natural law, which spontaneously provides safety and security to the government of the universe and eternally defends the sovereign domain of every galaxy and solar system".

The attractions of this to Mr Chissano and his generals seemed clear. From the end of 1994, all military and police recruits were ordered to meditate for 20 minutes, twice a day. More than 16,000 soldiers were taught yogic flying and TM, according to Mozambique's defence minister. So were 30,000 Mozambicans, according to the Maharishi movement.

In October, 1994, the deputy defence minister of the day, Antonio Hama Thay, wrote to the national military school ordering that, "transcendental meditation must be an integral part of the curriculum of the cadets in the school, as a requirement for them to become officers".

According to the current defence minister, Tobias Dai, the effect was overwhelming. Crime levels dropped; a drought was averted and economic growth, predicted at 6%, soared to 19%.

Yet in the past two months, for what the Maharishi Centre in Maputo describes as "administrative reasons", TM has been withdrawn from public life.   T

he new deputy defence minister, Henrique Banze, confirms that TM is no longer compulsory in the army, although the practice continues in some units. "My personal opinion is that transcendental meditation and yogic flying did not end the war," he said. "But then I never tried it."

Mr Chissano told the Guardian this week: "For me it is very relaxing and very simple - I just keep quiet and chant the mantras. The results have been scientifically proven. Many of my ministers find it enhances their capacity to work."

The trade minister, Carlos Morgado, is not one of them. "I'm afraid I'm too greedy for all that," he said. But the visible effect of TM on the 62-year-old Roman Catholic president was striking, Mr Morgado admitted.

"He emerges from each session looking like a strongman, charged up for another 10 hours' work."

Jacob Hermansen, a Norwegian instructor at the Maharishi Centre, claims to have put down an insurrection in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province last year by leading 200 army officers in yogic flying. He predicts more countries will follow Mozambique's example.

Mr Hermansen maintained that Mr Chissano was a highly skilled yogic flyer - though the president has never said as much himself - and had shown the way.

"The culture of war has to be replaced by the culture of peace. For that purpose, something deeper has to be changed in our mind and in our consciousness to prevent the recurrence of war."

"Patriotism assumes that our globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who have had the fortune of being born on some particular spot, consider themselves better, nobler, grander, more intelligent than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill, and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all the others. The inhabitants of the other spots reason in like manner, of course..."

"When the US Government, with the most powerful defense force in the world, and a defense budget of over $300 billion has hopelessly failed to defend its nation against the attacks of the enemy, what hope is there for any nation to protect itself against its enemies through the use of arms?"
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, World Peace Proposal Announcement, Wall St Journal, , 21 September 2001

"Having a positive attitude is just a shade different from having an negative attitude.
The main thing is that one knows how to use the power of silence..."
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, 31 December 1989

"If it's really just all about getting the numbers of meditators up, that all we need to do is to learn this simple technique and then practice it for creating coherence in the world, now is a good time  to drop the barriers, drop the obstacles and let's get going. All over the planet, we need a way to think and act like a world. So  what if the answer was in our own back yard and we never did anything  about it?".
