PM urged to resign over Kelly death
Tony Blair is facing calls to resign over the death of David Kelly, the defence official at the centre of the Iraq dossier row. The tragic twist in the Government's battle with the BBC overshadowed the Prime Minister's latest diplomatic tour. Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith wrote to Mr Blair demanding the recall of Parliament. Dr Kelly, a 59-year-old weapons expert, bled to death after apparently slashing his wrist at a beauty spot close to his Oxfordshire home. Friends blamed the strain of being named as the probable source of BBC accusations that Alastair Campbell "sexed up" intelligence on Iraq.

Kelly warned of 'dark actors'
Weapons expert Dr David Kelly told of "many dark actors playing games" in an e-mail to a journalist hours before his suicide, it was reported on Saturday. The words appeared to refer to officials at the Ministry of Defence and UK intelligence agencies with whom he had sparred over interpretations of weapons reports, according to the New York Times. The message gave no indication that he was depressed and said he was waiting "until the end of the week" before judging how his appearance before the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee had gone.

Kelly's life made 'intolerable'
Dr David Kelly, the scientist at the centre of the row over the Government's Iraq dossier, said his life had been made "intolerable", his family have revealed. Dr Kelly's wife Janice, and daughters Sian, 32, and twins Rachel and Ellen, 30, issued a statement through Thames Valley Police after it was revealed the defence official died after slashing one of his wrists. The statement, read at Wantage police station in Oxfordshire by Acting Superintendent David Purnell, also said the family were "utterly devastated" by the loss and paid tribute to Dr Kelly's "integrity, honour and dedication".

BA walkout causes holiday chaos
Flights to and from London's Heathrow Airport were plunged into chaos and 80,000 passengers, including many holidaymakers, had their travel plans cancelled after a walkout by British Airways staff. More than 360 flights were scrapped across three terminals at Heathrow after BA check-in staff staged a second unofficial walkout over possible changes to working practices. BA said staff had returned to work on Saturday night and that the airline would guarantee its services tomorrow pending the outcome of discussions.

A baby girl died after the roof of an Indian restaurant collapsed on a busy shopping street. The 10-month-old was taken to Sandwell Hospital along with her mother, who suffered a broken arm in the incident in High Street, West Bromwich. A second woman also suffered a broken arm and a man, who police said tried to get involved in the rescue, was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

Elderly stab victim fights for life
An elderly widower stabbed 45 times by a burglar was fighting for his life in hospital tonight. Malcolm Deighton, 70, was confronted by the man, in his early 30s, in the hallway of his home. The pair struggled on to the front drive where the attacker fled, leaving Mr Deighton bleeding on the ground.

5,000 call for end to gun crime
Up to 5,000 people gathered for a rally to highlight the rising level of gun crime in inner cities and called for community action to stop it. The Black United Front, which organised the famous Million Man March in Washington DC eight years ago, led the demonstration in Birmingham on Saturday. Organiser Kofi Klu hoped the rally would put the issue of black-on-black killings under the spotlight and give publicity to community perspectives on possible solutions.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said there were no survivors on board the helicopter, which had taken off from Biggin Hill airport.

Runaway's boyfriend freed on appeal
A Turkish court has released a bartender who was jailed for more than five years for the statutory rape of a British teenager who ran away from home to marry him, his lawyer said. Mehmet Sedat Ocak, 24, was released from prison in the south eastern city of Gaziantep on Friday after an appeals court in May overturned his conviction and ordered a new trial, lawyer Yasar Saglam said. He is free until the outcome of the new trial.
