An edited version of the following letter was published in the edition of 19th August 1997 of the
Dear Sir, Peace Corps of Yogic FlyersGiven the persistence of many conflicts around the globe and the failure of the more conventional peace-making approaches utilised by organisations such as the UN and the British Government in Northern Ireland, your editorial of 28th July rightly questions the attitude of sceptics who prefer to dismiss the Natural Law Partys appeal to local businesses to sponsor young unemployed people to form a peace corps of Yogic Flyers in Dorset. Your commentary does mention, however, that you cannot yet envisage a day when Yogic Flyers will replace the United Nations peace keeping force in Bosnia, or solve at a stroke the tragedy of Northern Irelands sometimes incomprehensible divisions. Your readers may, therefore, be interested to hear that for several years now the Government in Mozambique has been deploying large Divisions of Yogic Flyers in its army with considerable success. President Chissano of Mozambique has stated quite publicly that this approach has brought an end to the civil war in his country, as well as lowering crime and accident rates. The civil war in Mozambique (which is now over thanks to a national leader who has had the courage to apply in the field what extensive published scientific research on the subject had previously shown in similar circumstances in places as far apart as the Lebanon and Nicaragua) started in 1964 and terminated immediately the Yogic Flyers were deployed. The civil war has not returned. The conflict in Northern Ireland continues. (Time Magazine report on the success story of Mozambique) Your commentary also mentions that despite the unquestioned concern and compassion of the Natural Law Party on these matters, it has some way to go before winning the necessary credibility. In this respect some progress has been made more recently with the revelation by several national newspapers and TV stations that the newly elected leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague, has been a regular practitioner of Transcendental Meditation (on which Yogic Flying is based), since the age of 16. As Mr Hague begins to draw up the new Manifesto of the Conservative Party it will be very interesting to see whether he can match the courage of President Chissano. (Daily Telegraph article - "William Hague: from TM to PM?") In the meantime local business leaders should consider their own courage and the real opportunity which is now presented to them to help the young unemployed on their doorstep and in the process secure a better future for Dorset. Those who remain sceptical are invited to review the scientific research on this subject contained within published papers in independent peer-reviewed academic journals. These are available in libraries and on the internet. For those interested in all the facts, so that they may comment from a position of knowledge instead of ignorance, I commend the NLP Wessex Web site at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/natural_law_wessex.
