In mid January the Wessex Natural Law Party provided the main contribution to a one hour feature programme on Radio Wey Valley (serving the Hants, Surrey, Sussex borders) highlighting the threat to the environment and public health through the imminent and widespread introduction of genetically engineered organisms throughout agriculture and the food chain.
The programme began with recorded interviews of speakers from Southampton University, Friends of the Earth, and biotechnology company Zeneca. The main component of the programme then comprised live discussion and analysis with NLP environment spokesman, Mark Griffiths.
The range of the interview graphically demonstrated the extent to which it is planned to radically alter the fundamental nature of crops and foods across the whole globe within a very short period of time (perhaps as much as 80% of the world's food supply in three years) without extensive public consultation using genetic engineering. This is a science which is only in its infancy and one about which its own experts know almost nothing at this stage in its development. Yet already a growing body of published research clearly demonstrates its capacity to do immeasurable and irretrievable harm to the environment and to both human and animal health.
Although genetically engineered foods are already being imported into the UK from the United States Mr Griffiths put out an appeal for the media to draw widespread attention to this reckless course of action as quickly as possible, and asked listeners to take matters into their own hands. Listeners were advised to take the matter up with their MPs, MEPs and local supermarkets immediately.
Now established in over 60 countries the Natural Law Party is pressing for a blanket moratorium on the introduction of genetically engineered crops and food across the entire globe.
