2006. View from Platform 3 looking North, showing details of the main down signal. Note that there is only one signal controlling platforms 7 and 8. Note also the brighter decor - getting away from the drab (silver) grey of earlier years - a benefit from the demise of steam.

2006 View from Platform 4 looking North. More colourful. The building on the extreme right is the lift (elevator) for trolleys etc. Note also the screening on the bridge, presumably a safety feature with the advent of the wires.

The former 5A signal box situated on Platform 3. Note that the viewing balcony is still in position - industrial inertia! A Voyager can be seen through the adjacent arch.

A 2006 View from the Bridge. Facing South, note how much more colourful is the view than the instutional brown of an earlier era. The cream / white coloured building in the centre of the picture is the former 5A signal box.

Close up of the footbridge and the girder roof supports. Where the lights are under the bridge deck was formerly the newspaper etc outlet of John Menzies and Son (now in the outside porch).
An impessive rake of Freighhtliner wagons behind a smart Cl 66. Taken 14.30 hrs 12 March 2005

Same train viewed from within the station. The Voyager is probably North bound.

The Glasgow - Euston arrives - departure due 16.57 in Dec 2002. Propelled with a DVT at the up end. It departed about 5 mins late but was early into Preston with smart stops at Penrith, Oxenholme and Lancaster.
A loco hauled mail train is stabled below the West screen wall, the vehicles nearest the camera is NOT the locomotive but a Propelling Control Vehicle (PCV). The TPO Service (Travelling Post Office) service ended on the night of Friday / Saturday 9 - 10 Jan 2004. See three further below for the other type of mail train

Viewed from Pl 3, a Class 325 mail train stands in Pl 3, shortly to depart - early afternoon, Dec 2002. This is probably the 13.23 Shieldmuir - Willesden mail service. The TPO (Travelling Post Office) service ended on the night of Friday / Saturday 9 10 January 2004
A Virgin Voyager stands at Pl 3, early afternooon, December 2002
One of the three landmark in Carlisle. Dixon's Chimney - original height 306 feet, later shortened by removing its top hat. Surprisingly, the chimney is not a listed building, whereas, what was a factory, is a listed building as an example of (Victorian) industrial design - it is pleasing to the eye! The other landmarks are the Norman Carlisle Castle and Carlisle Cathedral which are worth a visit.
South end view Dec 2002. The highest building is the Carlisle Powerbox. The line to the left goes to the former Motorail terminal, behind the East screen wall, the two lines to the right are into Pl 5 and 6..
History on the Wall! A potted history of the pre - groupings companies on the Eastern wall.
