I commisioned this painting in about 1976. The artist is Robert Greenwood who at that time was studying Art in Liverpool. The picture depicts 6238, City of Carlisle, at the South end of the station 1947 / 1948. It carries the LMS number. Originally 6238 carried full streamlining, this was removed shortly after the end of World War 2. The loco number was changed to 46238 following nationalisation.
The shadowy figures on the right of the picture are meant to be my dad and I. I would be about twelve and my dad worked at the nearby Crown Street Goods yard. He might well have been using the station as a short cut on the way home after completing his '6 to 2' shift as a goods porter / checker.
