Liverpool County FA Girls League - Under 16's Division
Birkdale United 1 Mossley Hill 5
Birkdale faced their toughest test of the season as they faced 100% league leaders Mossley Hill. No-one was more aware of this than Hall, wo had played for their opponents last season, and in recognition of this Manager Noel made her Captain for the game. There were a number of changes from the last game. The girls were without Tuakli (work) and Gillingham (illness), but Fleming was back from illness (although in fairness she wasn't feeling too well and was showing a real team spirit turning up) and the team was bolstered with Lorentz being finally able to make her debut, having recovered from injury. The girls also benefitted from new signing Latham being able to take her place on the bench, although her fellow newcomer, Lomax, had a slight back injury and it was decided not to risk her.
The girls had a setback in the first few minutes of the game when a defensive mix-up at a corner saw Mossley Hill take an early lead. Their opponents gained confidence from this and pushed on, but excellent defending from the unit of Jellicoe, Donnelly, White and Lightfoot, plus some confident and inspired goalkeeping from Parker saw the deficit down to a single goal. As the half went on, Birkdale began to become more competitive in the midfield and a neat passing move saw Foster hit a powerful shot which was well-saved by the keeper. However, if this had been a warning for Mossley Hill they did not heed it, as a matter of minutes later Birkdale were level. Lightfoot took a throw in on the left which made it's way to Hall. She flicked the ball up and hit it powerfully towards goal, bouncing once on it's way into the net. This woke Mossley Hill up and they pressured the Birkdale goal, but were unable to find a way through, and the half-time whistle went to see the teams in level.
Noel and Paul congratulated the girls on their first half display, and told them they deserved to be level for the sheer work rate they had displayed. They told them to go out and enjoy the second half and see what they could do.
Mossley Hill had obviously had a good half-time team talk, and they came out with all guns blazing in the second half. Birkdale weathered the initial storm, but then their opponents broke the offside trap twice in quick succession to make the score 3-1. After this, Birkdale played their best football of the game with Lorentz and Fisk showing their quality and linking up well on a number of occasions. Bleacher was having an excellent game, as was Foster, and the pair were showing greater understanding throughout. Up-front, Latham impressed everyone with her ability to hold the ball up and lay it off for supporting players. She also showed that she wasn't afraid of the physical side if the game and proved to be a strong player, and one who with more games will get better and better.
Unfortunately, with Birkdale pushing on for the goals to get back into the game, they were caught out twice and the final score of 5-1 was more than a little harsh on the Birkdale girls. Noel congratulated Mossley Hill's manager, Rob, on his side's excellent display, while he complemented the Birkdale team, saying that for only their third game together they are coming together tremendously, singling out Fisk and Parker in particular for praise.
Noel and Paul conceded the girls would be disappointed with the result, but told them they should be proud of the performance. Not at one time did their heads go down and they stopped working. Every single player gave their best throughout and with more games they will surely cope with even the best teams in this league - as they showed in the first half. They should take great confidence from this performance and use it as a milestone for the season. Well done Girls!
