            Japan and Dubai October 2008

Some general images from my Japan trip

Osaka Kansai 30/9/08

A good selection of foreign airliners to be seen here along with some types from JAL and ANA not too common elsewhere. The excellent viewing deck allows for good photos, even at night.

Osaka Itami 1/10/08

One of the best airports for commuter types, particularly JAL DHC8-400’s, CRJ’s and Saab 340’s, and ANA DHC8-400’s.

Tokyo Haneda 1/10/08

The busiest airport by far in Japan, with two excellent viewing decks. A large proportion of JAL’s and ANA’s jet fleets can be seen here, along with some lesser carriers such as StarFlyer, Air Do, Skynet Asia, Skymark, plus a few Korean and Chinese flights. Haneda is one of the few Japanese airports with bizjets to be seen.

Atsugi 1/10/08

A joint US Navy and JMSDF base on the western outskirts of Tokyo. Plenty of P-3 Orions to be seen with a variety of other types too.

Iruma 1/10/08

One of two main bases of the Kawasaki C-1, this JASDF base is in the Northwest area of Tokyo. Also to be seen are YS-11’s, Gulf 4’s and Chinooks.

Tokyo Narita 2/10/08

Japan’s main international gateway, with a wide range of foreign airlines, plus a lot of freighters. Most of the airlines and types seen here are rarely seen elsewhere in Japan.

Tokyo Haneda 2/10/08

A much brighter day than the 1st, allowing some nice photos off the decks.

Okinawa 3/10/08

I’d hoped Okinawa/Naha AB would be the highlight of the trip and I wasn’t disappointed. Fantastic photo-ops, great weather, this very busy airport is shared with the military. Lots of F-15’s, F-4’s and so many other types on show, plus domestic airlines in abundance not too common elsewhere: Japan Transocean, Ryukyu Air Commuter etc.

Nagoya Centrair 3/10/08

Centrair has probably the best viewing deck of all, you simply cannot miss any movements. Not the busiest of airports, but a fair selection of foreign airlines made for some interesting visits.

Komaki Airshow 4/10/08

My first taste of a Japanese airshow at the main JASDF transport base, formerly Nagoya’s main airport. Lots of Hercs based, plus a good variety of static aircraft, the stars being the two recently-delivered tanker 767’s.

Gifu Museum 4/10/08

Kagamighara Museum is located just on the outskirts of Gifu’s airfield perimeter and has some very nice exhibits.

Nagoya Centrair 4/10/08

Another few hours on the excellent deck here.

Hamamatsu Airshow 5/10/08

This T-4 jet trainer base is south of Nagoya, and there were T-4’s in abundance ! Also based are the 767 AWACS, several of which were at the show.

Nagoya Centrair 5/10/08

My last visit here was a brief one, notable for a number of Korean flights.

Komatsu 6/10/08

This airport on the West coast of Japan, has very few airliner movements, but does allow for some good close-up photography from the mostly-deserted deck and other vantage points.  My reason for visiting was the JASDF F-15 fleet based opposite the terminal, which are to be seen in large numbers, and fly regular missions.

Tokyo Haneda 6/10/08

Back to Haneda in between flights, and a chance to make further inroads into the JAL and ANA fleets.

Fukuoka 7/10/08

In the far southwest of the country, Fukuoka is closer to Korea than Tokyo. As can be expected, numerous Korean flights can be seen along with many other foreign airliners from all round the region. The viewing deck allows some good photos, despite the mesh-type fencing all along it.

Osaka Kansai 7/10/08

My last evening in Japan, chance for some last tasty noodles and some nice night shots from the SkyDeck.

Dubai 8/10/08

The other highlight of the trip, Dubai was only a transfer on the way home, but a nice long one ! The quality of airliners here and the excellent photo-ops from the hotel roof, made sure the trip ended on a superb high note.
