"CORONATION" MODELS
The L.M.S. Orphanage Appeal Committee is issuing a very attractive Paper Weight model of the streamlined Coronation Engine 6220, about 5 1/2 inches in length, in oxidised finish, at a cost of half-a-crown.
These are excellent desk or table ornaments, and it is confidently expected the demand for them will be very large. For the present these may be obtained from Mr. W. J. BLAKE, Divisional Welfare Supervisor, Derby, or from the Editor of the L.M.S. Magazine, but it is hoped later to have quantities for sale at important centres, if members of the staff willing to help in this direction will kindly volunteer their services.
THE HERBERT JACKSON PRIZE.
The Herbert Jackson prize for 1938 has been awarded to Mr. J. N. BRADLEY, an Assistant Metallurgist in the Company's Research Laboratory at Derby, for his paper entitled "The Separation of Mixed Gunmetal and White Metal Borings". A. Jackson medal has also been awarded to Mr. C. W. NEWBERRY, Research Assistant, for a paper entitled "An Investigation into the Occurrence and Causes of Locomotive Tyre Failures".
COMMENDATION
The R.S.P.C.A. silver medal and certificate has been awarded to Lengthman J. E. THORNBER, Kirkby Lonsdale, for his bravery in assisting with the rescue of cattle from a blazing farm at great personal risk.
PORTER-ARTISTS
Mr. William KING, Porter, Blackburn, has been the recipient of many congratulations for his excellent pastel sketch advertisement in connection with excursion facilities for the Huddersfield v Blackburn Rovers F.A. Cup-tie. Mr. KING has done a considerable amount of work with his chalks whilst serving at Mill Hill, Hoghton, Cherry Tree, Burnly, Brinscall, Baxenden, and Accrington, whilst he has also painted scenery for productions given by a local Operatic and Dramatic Society.
Foreman HARTLEY, of Warrington Central (C.L.C.), has also been complimented by passengers on his illustrated rhymes on "The Square Deal" subject.
"DRAMATIC" SERVICES RECOGNISED
Two clerks of the Maryport Goods Office, Mr. J. W. COLLINS and Mr. S. B. MOSSOP, have been presented with long service medals by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, London, in recognition of 25 years' continuous service with the local Operatic Society, which has, during that period, given nearly £1,200 to local charities. Mr. MOSSOP is orchestra leader and treasurer of the society, and Mr. COLLINS is a committeeman and one of the principal acting members.
AYR BIRD FANCIER
Many appreciative remarks have been made about the Belleisle estate, Ayr, where Mr. GRIBBEN, Foreman at Ayr Passenger station, devotes all his spare time to the birds and animals and has an aviary which at a recent Council meeting was described as being "not only a credit to Ayr but to Scotland."
SUPERANNUITANTS
Our attention has been drawn to another instance where father and son are both retired on superannuation, this time in Scotland.
Mr. Robert FINDLAY, Chief Forwarding Clerk, Glasgow (College), retired in December last, and his father, Mr. William FINDLAY, former Stationmaster at Castle Douglas, who retired in 1914, is still alive, and will attain the age of 90 very shortly.
