UNKNOWN MONTH - 1939 - OBITUARIES (PART LIST)

 

 

 ABERDEEN

Mr. Ralph CANT, Yard Inspector, who died recently after a short illness. Mr. CANT was 63 years of age.

ALEXANDRA DOCK

Mr. H. LAWLER, Clerk, Goods Dep., aged 57, who passed away on March 15 after a long illness. Mr. LAWLER joined the Company in 1897 and retired in 1938 owing to ill health.

Mr. John MORGAN, former Cartage Statistical Clerk, aged 54, who passed away recently after a long illness. Mr. MORGAN entered the service in 1899 and retired in December last owing to ill health.

APPLEBY

Mr. A. ASLING, retired Signal and Telegraph Inspector, who died in hospital on March 14. Mr. ASLING retired seven years ago after working at Rotherham for a period.

BATH

Mr. C. G. WAGNER, Station Lampman, aged 59, who died on March 17.

Mr. Percy BRUNT, Station Foreman, who had been employed at Bath for about 11 years. Mr. BRUNT, who had previously worked at London, Manchester, Gloucester and Avonmouth Dock, was a keen cricketer in his younger days.

BELFAST

Mr. James MUSSEN, Leading Hand, Loco Dept., who died on March 10. Mr. MUSSEN entered the service as an Apprentice Fitter in 1896.

BOLTON

Mr. G. O. HUMPHREYS, M.B.E., aged 62, late District Goods Manager, who passed away on March 19. Mr. HUMPHREYS joined the L.N.W.R as a Superior Apprentice 46 yrs ago & sub-sequently occupied the positions of assistant to District Traffic Supt., Swansea, Asst. D.G.M. at Wolverhampton, Manchester and Leeds, afterwards being appointed D.G.M. at Bolton. Mr. HUMPHREYS retired 3 yrs ago owing to ill health. During the War period Mr. HUMPHREYS was first employed with the Minister of Munitions and afterwards with the Coal Controller.

BURTON-ON-TRENT

Mr. Harry BAKER, Leading Shunter at Wetmore, aged 40, who passed away recently, having served at Burton in various grades for 19 years.

Mr. Charles WINSON, Relief Controller, aged 52, who died on March 25 after a long illness, having spent 36 years at Burton.

CAMDEN

Mr. Alfred ROFFE, who died on March 25. He commenced as Engine Cleaner at Camden in 1889 and was later Signalman on the N.L. Section for about 40 years, retiring in 1932.

CAMDEN TOWN

Mr. Walter THOMAS, Labourer, who died at the Dawlish Railway Convalescent Home on March 29.

CONWAY

Mr. R. DAVIES, Leading Porter, aged 48, who died recently after a long illness. Mr. DAVIES joined the Company 25 years ago and had spent most of his time at Colwyn Bay. "Bob" was of a genial disposition and popular with his colleagues.

CORBY AND WELDON

Mr. T. W. WELLS, C. & W. Examiner, who passed away suddenly on March 19. Mr. WELLS was 50 years of age and had been in the service for 32 years.

DEWSBURY

Mr. William LEA, Goods Checker, Wellington Road station, aged 64, who died whilst prceeding to work on March 27. Mr. LEA had been employed by the Company for over 30 years.

GLASGOW

Bailie John INNES, who passed away on March 31 after a long illness. Mr. INNES joined the "Caley" in 1884 and retired in 1932 when he held the position of Chief Collector, Goods Accounts Office. Mr. INNES had taken a prominent part in local affairs for many years.

Mr. John HABBICK, who died on March 26, aged 74. Mr. HABBICK retired in 1925, having completed 49 years' service in the Audit Office.

Mr. Thomas KELLY, Cartage Foreman, College Station, aged 57, who passed away on March 16 after a short illness. Mr. KELLY was very popular with the staff and his loss in deeply regretted.

KILMARNOCK

Mr. James HANDLEY, aged 67, who died suddenly on March 6. Mr. HANDLEY, who was Traffic Inspector at Hurlford Mineral Sidings, retired in 1931 after 42 years' service during which he had served in various capacities at Greenock, Johnstone, Elderslie, Irvine, Kilmarnock and Hurlford.

Mr. Robert LOGIE, Goods Carter, who died on March 17 after a long illness. Mr. LOGIE joined the service in 1920.

LAZONBY

Mr. T. FAULDER, retired Lengthman, who died on March 20 after a short illness. He had only been in retirement for 18 months.

LEASOWE

Mr. Isaac WEBB, aged 78, former Stationmaster at Leasowe (Wirral), who died suddenly on March 25. Mr. WEBB served 44 years with the Seacombe, Hoylake & Deeside Railway, Wirral Railway and the L.M.S.

LONDONDERRY

Mr. Thomas MCGARVERY, former Traffic Inspector, who died on March 23. Mr. MCGARVEY retired in 1935 after 42 years' service.
