FEBRUARY 1937 - OBITUARIES

 

 

ACCRINGTON

Mr. Joseph LEA, who retired from the position of Chief Clerk nine years ago. Mr. LEA was formerly Chief Claims Clerk at Burnley.

BANGOR

Mr. Thomas BUTLER, who died on December 3. Mr. BUTLER joined the L.N.W. Company in 1899 and retired in 1928 after 29 years' service in the Engineering Department.

Mr. BUTLER had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, being awarded the Zulu Medal and Clasp, Egyptian Medal, Khedive Star, Victory Medal, and the Long Service Medal.

BIRKENHEAD

Mr. Walter EDWARDS, aged 77, who retired from the position of Deputy Chief Delivery Clerk in 1920. Mr. EDWARDS was a good cricketer and a keen footballer in his younger days.

BIRMINGHAM

Mr. Evan WILLIAMS, District Auditor, who died on January 1 following an accident at home. The interment took place at Witton Cemetery.

BLACKBURN

Mr. J. H. HORROCKS, aged 70. Mr. HORROCKS started as a Platelayer and during his 32 years' service rose to the position of District Chief Inspector.

BRISTOL

Mr. Frederick POTTS, who retired five years ago from the Police Department owing to ill-health.

BURTON-ON-TRENT

Mr. Charles Michael SUMSTON, who retired from the position of Engine Driver in 1932. Mr. SUMSTON was knocked down and killed by a motor-bus.

Mr. G. WARDLE, who recently passed away at the age of 87. Mr. WARDLE was employed by the Company for over 50 years and held the position of Engine Driver prior to retirement.

CREWE

Mr. H. STEELE, who was interred on December 18. Mr. STEELE was a Fireman at the North Steam Sheds.

CRIANLARICH

Mr. William MOFFAT, who passed away recently. He was Signalman at Crianlarich for 27 years.

CUDWORTH

Mr. George James HILL, aged 77. Mrs. HILL, who retired from the position of Signalman, was formerly a Porter at Cheltenham, where he joined the Company 40 years ago.

EUSTON

 Mr. Robert (Bob) COX, who passed away on November 23. Mr. COX entered the service as a Telegraph Clerk at Euston in 1890 and served at that station until his retirement in 1928.

Mr. Charles George HARTLAND, Cook, Dining Car Section, who collapsed and died on December 31. Mr. HARTLAND was due to retire in April after 36 years' service.

GLASGOW

Mr. Robert K. LOCKE, who retired from the position of Superintendent at College Goods station in 1933, through health reasons. His colleagues were represented at the funeral.

Mr. George SMITH, Checker, College Goods station, who recently passed away at the age of 37. Mr. SMITH joined the service as a temporary porter in 1922, and was appointed to the position of Checker ten years later.

GORSEINON

Mr. James Arthur GILES, Chief Forwarding Clerk, who died in Swansea Hospital on Christmas Day. Joining the service 37 years ago, Mr. GILES went to the Central Wales District from Oxford in 1916. He was 51 years of age, and leaves a widow and family. The funeral took place at Killay Parish Church on Tuesday, December 29.

HEYSHAM HARBOUR

Mr. G. R. GIGGLE, who died recently at the age of 69. Prior to retirement, Mr. GIGGLE was employed in the Rates and Correspondence Office.

HORNCHURCH

Mr. George James PAMMENT, Platelayer, who died suddenly whilst crossing a field near his home.

KETTERING

Mr. Charles FOREMAN, aged 77, a retired Permanent Way Inspector. Mr. FOREMAN was a keen supporter of the Kettering Town F.C., and held the position of Treasurer for some years.

KILMARNOCK

Mr. W. B. PRENTICE, District Traffic Agent, who recently died in a nursing home. Mr. PRENTICE was a noted sheep-dog expert and judged at the 1936 Scottish National Trials.

LANCASTER

Mr. James SHAW, who died on December 20 at the age of 75. Mr. SHAW held positions at Lancaser, London, Whitehaven and Northampton during his 50 years' service, and retired from the position of Superintendent at the Castle Station.

Mr. SHAW was the founder of the Old Lancastrians Associations of Retired Railway Officials.

LEEDS

Mr. John Edwin WALKER, Chief Claims Clerk, who had served the L.N.W. and L.M.S. Companies for over 40 years. With the exception of 18 months in the capacity of Chief Rates and Canvassing Clerk, Mr. WALKER held the position of Chief Claims Clerk since 1917.

Before the funeral cortege left Leeds by rail for Stalybridge, about 50 people, including a number of Mr. WALKER's brother Masons, paid tribute by filing past the coffin.

LICHFIELD

Mr. Bernard Joseph BAKER, aged 45, who was knocked down and killed by a passing train. Mr. BAKER was a Signal Linesman.

LIVERPOOL

Mr. Edward Roden SMITH, at the age of 70. Mr. SMITH retired from the position of Timber Clerk in 1926.

MEDBOURNE

Mr. Henry ROLLINSON who died recently at the age of 75. Mr. ROLLINSON was Stationmaster at Uppingham for some years.

NELSON

Mr. George WARD, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 65. Mr. WARD had been in the service for 47 years, serving as Goods Porter, Platform Porter, Signalman, Station Foreman and Ticket Collector. He retired owing to illness in February 1936.

PEMBROKE DOCK

Mr. Albert WEALE, who passed away at Bristol on December 29 after a long illness. Mr. WEALE retired from the position of Goods Agent and Canvasser in 1924.

PETERBOROUGH

Mr. Edward MAISHMENT, who passed away at Thrapston on December 28.

Mr. MAISHMENT worked in the Kettering Goods Department prior to his transference in 1908 to Peterborough, where he held the position of District Collector until retirement in 1924. Mr. MAISHMENT was well known in local amateur theatrical circles.

ROTHERAM

Mr. J. J. HOBSON, aged 70. Mr. HOBSON retired some time ago after 30 years' service in the Engineering Department.

ST. ALBANS

Mr. John EADY, aged 78, who passed away on Christmas Day. Mr. EADY worked as an Engine Driver at Wellingborough, Cricklewood and St. Albans during his 49 years' service.

SHARNBROOK

Mr. Ernest Frederick BETTS, who worked as a Platelayer for 33 yrs. Mr. BETTS had been ill for some time.

SHEFFIELD

Mr. J. QUINN, Officeman, who passed away on January 1.

Mr. W. G. TATLOW, who died on December 18 after a long illness. Mr. TATLOW had been employed as a Clerk in the Overseas and Continental Department.

SOUTHAM AND LONG ITCHINGTON

Mr. Amos William WALKER, who retired in 1927 after 34 years' service in the Engineering Department.

SOWERBY BRIDGE

Mr. Albert BATES, aged 55. Mr. BATES held the position of Running Shed Foreman in the Locomotive Department.

STAFFORD

Mr. Leonard WILLETTS, a retired Porter-Guard. Mr. WILLETTS was 75 years of age and retired from the Company in 1927.

SWANSEA

Mr. John ROBERTS, who retired through health reasons in 1906 from a position in the Goods Department.

Mr. ROBERTS was formerly Stationmaster at Builth Road.

TEWKESBURY

Mr. Harry GODWIN, aged 43. Mr. GODWIN joined the Company in 1910 at Bengeworth and served at Bristol and Gloucester prior to appointment as Goods Foreman, Tewkesbury in 1926.

TISSINGTON

Mr. William Thomas ARROWSMITH, aged 49, who was recently killed in an accident.

TODMORDEN

Mr. W. SHARPLEY, who passed away on December 10 after a short illness. Mr. SHARPLEY had been Stationmaster at Todmorden for four years and previously held a similar position at Walsden.

TYLDESLEY

Mr. J. H. FEARNHEAD, who passed away on December 15 in his 72nd year. Mr. FEARNHEAD served the Company for 49 years, and retired from the position of Signalman in 1929.

UTTOXETER

Mr. Joseph Henry JOHNSON, Foreman Shunter, who passed away on December 20 at the age of 55. Mr. JOHNSON joined the Company in 1901 and served at Uttoxeter for 23 years, during which he took a prominent part in ambulance activities.

WARMLEY

Mr. H. C. BOURTON, who recently passed away at the age of 77. Mr. BOURTON was in the service for 50 years.

WATFORD

Mr. James HESTER, who died on December 17. Mr. HESTER was transferred to Watford as Assistant Signalman in 1902, where he remained until retirement in 1936. Mr. HESTER was a keen cricketer.

WELLINGBOROUGH

Mr. Alfred Edwin PARSONS, Yard Inspector, who collapsed and died in the office. Mr. PARSONS was 54 years of age.

WIGSTON (SOUTH)

Mr. James William BOSWELL, who recently passed away at the age of 79. Mr. BOSWELL worked with the Company for 50 years prior to retirement and recently celebrated his golden wedding.

WILLESDEN JUNCTION

Mr. Thomas RAWLINGS, aged 54. Mr. RAWLINGS, who held the position of Inspector, was crushed between two coaches and received injuries which proved fatal.
