Long Service Gold Awards.

The following members of L.N.E.R. classes qualified for the Company's long service ambulance gold medals and bars during the six months ending March 31, and these awards, will be distributed through departmental channels as soon as received from the manufacturers.

BISHOP'S STORTFORD.

The eleventh annual competition for the BARRETT shield and BRAZIER cup took place on April 5 and resulted as follows:--

(1) Bishop's Stortford, L.N.E.R.;

(2) Bishop's Stortford, St. John A.B.;

(3) and (4) teams from Ware, St. John A.B.

Captain GOODLEY was the Judge. Mr. BARRETT, Stationmaster, presided at the distribution of awards, which were handed over by Mrs. GARRAWAY. Among those present were Mr. GARRAWAY (Asst. District Loco. Supt., Cambridge), Dr. J. YOUNG, Mr. WARREN, and Mr. A.T. PAIGE (Secretary). The members of the winning team were:-- W.C. WILSON, F. CHAPMAN, S.E. ROSE and E. RANDALL.

G.E. SECTION FINAL COMPETITION.

This competition took place at the Mechanics' Institution, Stratford, on March 29, with the following result:--

Bishopsgate "B" (283 1/2), Parkeston "B" (270 1/2), Bishopsgate "A"(269), Parkeston "A" (228), Cambridge (222), Stratford Printing Works "A" (210), March "A" (191 1/2); maximum marks 450.

The individual prize went to Loader W. ULLMER, Bishopsgate, who secured 65 1/2 point out of 90. Doctors WHITE, KNOX and JENKINS were the Judges. Sir Gerald TALBOT (President of the Centre) presented the cup and prizes, and among those present were Messrs. J. SHARPE, S.L. BAISTER, F. WILSON, C.B. SMITH, L.P. PARKER, T.O. MEIN, S. COOPER and Captain GOODLEY (Centre Secretary).

INTER-RAILWAY COMPETITION.

The result of the Preliminary Competition for Ungrouped Railways judged by Doctor SCOTT on March 24, was as follows:--

(1) Midland & Great Northern Joint Line (293 1/2), Metropolitan Line, L.P.T.B. (289), Cheshire Lines Committee (286 1/2), Somerset & Dorset Joint (259), maximum marks 400. The Mid. & G.N. Joint Line, represented by a team from Moulton, thus secured a place in the Final Inter-Railway Competition to take place in London on May 24.

ORDER OF ST. JOHN.

 Mr. W.C. CROWE, Station Inspector, March, has been admitted as a Serving Brother in the Order of St. John, the investiture being fixed to take place at St. John's Gate, London, on May 12. Mr. CROWE has been actively engaged for 30 years in both railway and brigade ambulance work, and is the holder of the Company's long service ambulance gold awards. Congratulations to Mr. CROWE on this high recognition of his sustained interest and helpfulness in the noble work of first aid.

DEWSBURY.

The class examination took place at Dewsbury Station on March 5, by Dr. A.W.W. BROUGHTON, of Batley. It is pleasing to record that only one failed out of 15 examined. Awards were presented to the following:--

First Aid Certificates - Roland DAWSON, Eric LOCKWOOD, Harold LODGE, Joseph TATTERSFIELD, Percival TERRY, Albert WOOD.

Medallions - Harold OLDROYD, Harry LODGE, Harold TERRY.

Labels - Arthur DUDDING, Horace GORING, John HALLETT, Norman HIRST, Jesse TODD.

ABERDEEN.

The prompt and effective service rendered by ambulance-trained railwaymen in the accident last October, when an engine crashed into a fishmongers' train, was referred to on March 16, by Mr. J.G. SINGER, Traffic Superintendent, Aberdeen District, Aberdeen, when he presided at the annual social evening held by the above class.

Mr. SINGER read the examiner's report. Twenty-seven pupils had been presented and all had passed. The one disappointing feature was that, of the twenty-seven, only eleven had been railwaymen.

The certificates and medallions were presented by Mrs. SINGER.

Two medical books, the gift of the class, were handed to Dr. LAMB by Mr. T. WRIGHT, Assistant Traffic Superintendent, who paid tribute to Dr. LAMB's work in his first session with the class.

An excellent programme was enjoyed by a large attendance of members and friends, the arrangements for the evening being in the hands of the class secretary, Mr. F. CLARK.

NORTH EASTERN AREA COMPETITONS, 1939.

York District, held at Railway Institute, York, on March 22.

District Shield and Police Cup presented by Mr. R.S. JACKSON, Yardmaster, York.

Darlington District, held at Railway Institute, Darlington, on February 18.

District Shield and Cup presented by Mrs. J. ANDERSON.

Newcastle District, held at Literary Institute, Gateshead, on February 25.

Judges - Dr. E.J. BURNETT, Saltburn; Dr. H. FALLOWS, Redcar.

Mr. L. BALLAN presented the District Shield, George JACKSON Cup and Burrows Shield.

Leeds District, held at Y.M.C.A., Belvedere, Harrogate, on March 4.

Judges - Dr. C.D. WILSON, Darlington; Dr. E.B. APPLEBY, Newcastle.

The District Shield and Cups were presented by the Mayoress of Harrogate, Mrs. Herbert DAWSON.

Hull District, held at Ambulance Rooms, Anlaby Road, Hull, on March 15.

Judges - Dr. W.A. HOGG, Darlington; Dr. W.J. PAYNE, Darlington.

District Shield presented by Mrs. J.S. HARPER. Mr. S. COOPER, Centre Secretary, presented framed votes of thanks on Vellum to Messrs. F.R. CHARLTON and J.H. RAWSON, also a long service gold medal to Mr. H. SMITH.

Middlesbrough District, held at Parish Hall, Lord Street, Redcar, on March 25.

Judges - Dr. L.L. WESTROPE, Gateshead; Dr. G.P. HARLAN', Newcastle.

District Shield presented by Mr. O.P. HUTCHINSON, District Locomotive Superintendent, Darlington.

"WHARTON SHIELD" AMBULANCE COMPETITION.

Ambulance teams representing the six districts of the North Eastern Area Centre of the St. John Ambulance Association competed in the Final Competition for the Wharton Shield at York on 15 April. The Competition , which included both "individual" and "team" tests, were judged by Dr. A.C. WHITE KNOX M.C., of London.

Dr. WHITE KNOX reviewed the results of the Competition and gave some useful hints on competition work. Mr. C. M. JENKIN JONES, the Divisional General Manager and President of the Ambulance Centre, presented the Wharton Shield and Medals to the Tyne Dock team, and the "Hornsby" Challenge Cup to the Hull Paragon team. Mr. JENKIN JONES said that the increase of 5 in the number of teams competing was encouraging and this was typical of the growing interest which had been shown in the Ambulance movement during the present session; 188 classes had been formed in the North Eastern Area, an increase of 16 compared with last year, and it was clear that the number of successful students would again show a considerable increase.

Dr. J.G. MCBRIDE, Chairman of the Company's All-Line Special Ambulance Committee, proposed a vote of thanks to the Centre President. Amongst those present were Dr. F.J. MULHOLLAND of Sacriston, Mr. S.T. BURGOYNE, Superintendent, North Eastern Area, and Mr. T.B. HARE, District Superintendent, Darlington.

SOUTHERN SCOTTISH AREA CHALLENGE CUP AND DEUCHAR'S TROPHY.

The final competition for the S.A.A. Challenge Cup was held on April 14, in the headquarters of the St. Andrew's Ambulance Association, Glasgow.

The Deuchars Cup, awarded to the team gaining highest marks in the practical section, was also won by the Dunfermline team. The arbiters were Dr. A. MITCHELL MCLURE, Dr. John B. WILSON and Dr. A. DRYDEN MOFFAT, to whom a cordial vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. J.C.L. TRAIN, Engineer. Lt. Col. The Hon. A.C. MURRAY, Chairman of the Scottish Local Board, presented the cups and prizes to the winning team, and remarked on the very encouraging enthusiasm displayed by the staff in their ambulance training.

Mr. R. GARDINER, Superintendent, moved a vote of thanks to the St. Andrew's Ambulance Association for kindly placing their accommodation and equipment at the company's disposal, Mr. HENDERSON, General Secretary, replying for the Association. Mr. J.H. HUNTER, Solicitor, thanked Lt. Col. MURRAY for presiding and presenting the prizes.

LOUTH.

Class lectures have been given on Sunday mornings by Dr. Ralph MORTON, and an examination was held on March 19, by Dr. T.R. FULTON, of Sutton-on-Sea. Twenty-five sat. All passed, and the following awards were presented:--

Certificates - H. GOODLIFFE; A.S. GRICE and A. MONCASTER.

Vouchers - C.L. HOBDEN and G.A. SCOTT.

Medallions - T. BRANT and A. STARR.

Labels - D.E. AYRE; H. ALDRIGE; J.W. COULSON; W. COPPIN; E. DAVISON; W.H. ELSE; H.H. ELMAN; L. NESS; L.N. WELLS; D. ROYLE; H. STANLEY; J.W. JACKLIN; E. CHANDLER and J.W. WHITE.

The Class Instructor was Mr. H. STANLEY.

LOFTHOUSE.

The tenth annual supper of this class took place at the Victoria Hotel on April 7, the chair being taken by MR. W.E. GREEN, District Superintendent, Leeds, who was supported by Dr. BOTTOMLEY, Messrs. FRANCE, GROVES and LONGBOTTOM (West Riding Secretary). Mr. GREEN presented the trophy and other awards, congratulating the members on their efficiency. Toasts were dealt with by Messrs. LONGBOTTOM, BARHOLONEW, BICHENO and GROVES, whilst Messrs. HOWE and KERSHAW entertained with musical items.

DARLINGTON.

The District Engineer's Department annual class competition for the Bygate and Wade Challenge Cup took place on March 11, in the L.N.E.R. Institute, North Road, Darlington. The President of the class, Mr. J. ANDERSON (Works Superintendent), presided. He was accompanied by Mrs. ANDERSON, who presented the cup and medals. The test was of a practical nature, and Messrs. J.B. SMITH and R. WAKE of North Road Locomotive Works acted as Judges. The results were as follows:--

BISHOP AUCKLAND

The annual dinner of the Bishop Auckland class was held in Eden Theatre Hotel, Bishop Auckland, on March 21. Mr. W. SNAITH, Stationmaster, Coundon, presided. The toast of "The King" was, followed by that of "The Railway Companies," proposed by Mr. W. SNAITH; Mr. C.E. WALLS, Stationmaster, Bishop Auckland, and Dr. U.J. CHERRY responded. The Chairman congratulated the members on again obtaining 100 per cent. passes in the examinations. He stressed the importance, from both local and national points of view, of ambulance work.
