Mr. W. PHILIP, divisional accountant, Scottish Area, retired on March 29th, after completing 50 years' service. He joined the North British Railway Company in 1888 as a clerk at Dunfermline and was transferred to the General Accountant's Office, Edinburgh, in 1890, becoming chief clerk and book-keeper in that office in 1913. On amalgamation of the railways in 1923 he was appointed chief book-keeper in the Chief Accountant's Office of the L.N.E.R., at London, returning in 1929 to Edinburgh as divisional accountant of the Scottish Area. On April 3, Mr. PHILIP was entertained by the officers of the Scottish Area to a luncheon in the North British Station Hotel, Edinburgh, when the chair was taken by Mr. George MILLS, divisional general manager. In wishing Mr. PHILIP good health and happiness in his retirement, Mr. MILLS asked him to accept the gift of a radiogram as a mark of appreciation. Mr. MILLS spoke in appreciative terms of Mr. PHILIP's long service with the Company and stressed in particular the very arduous work he was called upon to perform when he took up on amalgamation the position of chief bookkeeper of the L.N.E.R., Company. This necessitated the preparation of a completely new set of books, bringing together the accounts of no less than six companies, each of which had methods peculiar to themselves. Congratulations and good wishes were also extended to Mr. PHILIP by Messrs. G. R. BEGG, DAVIDSON, FRASER, C. G. JARRETT, F. W. LAMB and Dr. GUNN. A second presentation was made to Mr. PHILIP on behalf of the staff of the Divisional Accountant's Office, when a gold wristlet watch and wallet of notes were presented to him by Mr. A. E. GIBSON. The chair was taken by Mr. J. RANKEN, and other speakers included Messrs. D. SWAN and J. BUGLAS.
At a gathering of Southern Area officers in the Board Room at Liverpool Street on February 17, Mr. J. W. ODDY was presented with a grandfather clock and silver tea service on his retirement after 46 years' service. The presentation was arranged by Mr. J. LEES and Mr. F. LAYTON. Tributes were paid to Mr. ODDY's work and the esteem in which he is held by Messrs. C. J. SELWAY, H. H. MAULDIN, V. M. BARRINGTON-WARD, D. M. GRACIE, F. LEIGH, F. WARRINER, S. A. V. GREGORY and H. R. STATHAM. Mr. ODDY began as a clerk at Bramley in 1893, and later served at Beeston Leeds Passenger Superintendent's Office, Superintendent's Office, King's Cross, and the Chief Passenger Agent's Office, King's Cross. In 1911 he returned to the Superintendent's Office, and became a chief of section in 1919. Following amalgamation in 1923, he was made chief of the Traffic Section, Passenger Manager's Office, Liverpool Street, where in 1926 he received the appointment of assistant to passenger manager. He retired on January 31. On another occasion a presentation of a useful oak bureau was made to Mr. ODDY by the staff of the department, as a mark of esteem.
Mr. G. H. CUNNINGHAM, working foreman, Benwick, retired in February, and received from his colleagues and the traders a silver wrist watch and umbrella, with a fireside chair for his wife. The presentation was made by Mr. HULLS, stationmaster, Whittlesea, on March 15, and Messrs. COLBERT, WOODS, POUNCEY, and NOBLE were among those who spoke. Mr. CUNNINGHAM started at Bishopsgate Goods in 1899, and later served at Spitalfields Granary before his removal to Benwick in 1912. He served with the Colours for nearly three years during the South African War.
Mr. S. J. SMITH, cashier, Bishopsgate Goods, received a sum of money to mark the occasion of his recent retirement after 45 years' service. The presentation was made on March 3 by Mr. WALDEN, Chief of the Accounts, who was supported by Messrs. ASTLING, BEER, IGGLEDEN, WOODS, SAUNDERS, MASON and Miss SELL. Mr. SMITH took part in Railway Mission activities at Bishopsgate.
Ganger G. PALMER, who entered the service at Saxham in 1900 and was transferred to Tollesbury in 1906, retired on January 28, and received a farewell gift of money subscribed by all grades of the staff at Kelvedon, Hill House, and the Tollesbury branch. Mr. STOAKLEY, stationmaster, made the presentation.
A presentation of a clock was made to Goods Guard R. FLETCHER, King's Lynn, when he retired on February 18 after nearly 48 years' service. The gift was handed over by Mr. MAUDE, stationmaster, who was supported by several other speakers. Mr. FLETCHER started as a porter at Hunstanton and was transferred to King's Lynn in 1898. He was noted for his scrupulous time-keeping in hours of dury.
Passenger Guard A. HERRINGTON, King's Lynn, retired on January 17, and received a walking stick for himself and a fireside chair for his wife, the gifts being handed over by Mr. MAUDE, stationmaster, on behalf of the staff. Mr. HERRINGTON started as a porter at Fordham in 1891, and later served at March and Downham before moving to King's Lynn in 1897. He was made head passenger guard in 1914. He had no late marks and had never missed a day's work through illness.
Mr. J. S. TURNER clerk, Inwards Department, Bishopsgate, retired on March 4, after 46 1/2 years' service. He was presented with a chiming clock by his colleagues. Mr. GOZZARD, Shed Superintendent, presided, and paid tribute to Mr. TURNER's unfailing attention to duty and good fellowship. Mr. H. NURSEY, Chief Delivery Clerk, Mr. S. HOFFMAN, and Mrs. SCARROW also spoke. Mr. W. SLOCOMBE made the presentation.
Mr. J. W. PIDD, until recently ganger on the Batley to Dewsbury length, retired on the March 26 after completing nearly 47 years' service. He commenced as underman at Flushdyke in 1892, and after being sub-ganger at Woodkirk from 1901 for a period of 15 years, was appointed ganger at Dewsbury, on which length he remained until his retirement.
Mr. H. E. SMITH, Stationmaster, Woodham Ferrers, retired on April 12, at the age of 60, after 43 years' service. He began as a porter at Althorne in 1896 and served as goods clerk at Burnham-on-Crouch and Harwich. He entered the stationmaster's grade at Kirby Cross in 1824 and came to Woodham Ferrers in 1928. He was presented with a chromium and black glass pen-and-inkwell stand, subscribed to by the staff of the Maldon and Southminster Branches.
On April 1 a well-known figure in the Mechanical Engineer's Office at Stratford, Messenger A. DAY, retired after nearly fifty years' service. His retirement was marked by the presentation of a wallet containing bank notes, by Mr. CARR, Mechanical Engineer, on behalf of the subcribers. Mr. DAY's genial disposition will be remembered for many years.
Mr. Hugh SMITH, Locomotive Running Foreman, Polmont, retired on April 1, after 47 years' service. He joined the Company as a cleaner at St. Margarets in December, 1891, and after promotion to fireman and driver he was appointed assistant running foreman in February, 1921, and on October 1, 1930, became loco-motive running foreman at Polmont. The staff wished Mr. SMITH good health and many years of retirement.
After 53 years' service, yard foreman W. STOCKDALE, Ardsley, retired on April 17. He bagan as a half-time dray lad at Leeds, Wellington Street, in 1885, and later was a chain lad, night messenger, and shunter at Leeds. Promotion brought him to foreman shunter at Hunslet and finally to yard foreman at Ardsley.
Mr Alexander FRASER retired from the position of signalman at Dyce on January 10, after 46 years' service. At a gathering of the staff at Dyce on January 29, Mr. FRASER was presented with an umbrella and smokers' outfit, with an umbrella for Mrs. FRASER, the presentation being made by MR. SOUTER.
Mr. T. H. COLEMAN, clerk, Dukinfield Works, who retired on March 31, started in the Carriage and Wagon Office, Gorton, in June, 1889, left the office in 1894, and served his time as wagon maker. He left he service in 1898, but came back as wagon maker in 1899. After two years in the shops he was transferred to clerical duties. Upon leaving, Mr. GLAZE, Assistant Works Manager, presented an electric wireless set to Mr. COLEMAN from the staff at Dukinfield and friends at other depots. Mr. COLEMAN has been a keep bowler, and an enthusiastic supporter of Manchester City since his boyhood.
Mr. John LEYLAND, foreman of the Dukinfield C. & W. Works Smithy, retired on March 27, on reaching the retiring age. He started as a smith on the L. & N.W. Railway at Earlstown in 1887, and joined the Great Central at Gorton in 1909 as a smith. He was appointed assistant foreman in 1919 and foreman in 1934. Mr. LEYLAND was presented with a wallet containing bank notes by his colleagues as a mark of esteem, also he received a presentation from his staff at a function on March 24.
Mr. J. W. BUXTON, stationmaster, Cleethorpes, retired on April 22 after nearly 46 years' service, and on March 31 a presentation was made to him at the Dolphin Head. Mr. BUXTON began as a traffic inspector's clerk in 1893, and four years later came to Grimsby as chief clerk in the Grimsby Docks traffic office. He remained there for ten years until he was transferred to the district office where he served in various capacities. In 1930 Mr. BUXTON took over control of New Holland, where he was stationmaster until 1936, when he was transferred to Cleethorpes. Mr. H. FREEAR, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. BUXTON with a well-filled wallet, and Mr. PROBERT, chairman, wished Mr. and Mrs. BUXTON a long and happy retirement. Mr BUXTON also received an automatic pipe-lighter from Mr. R. DRING, of Messrs. EASONS. Mr. HAMMOND, Mrs. C. HALLAM, Messrs. T. WINN, W. HARLAND, J. MCKENZIE, W. FORD, A. E. OSBORNE, J. DUKES, G. W. PEARSON, G. FLINDERS and A. HARDY also spoke.
On March 15, a presentation was made to Mr. Wm. RYALL, Goods Agent, Grimsby Town Goods Depot., Mr. H. A. TRUDGETT, Chief Clerk, presided, and amongst those present were Mr. J. E. KITCHING, Port Master, Messrs. G. R. ABBOT, A. E. BUXTON and H. CHARLTON. Mr. KITCHING made the presentation of a wallet containing Treasury notes, and referred to Mr. RYALL's sterling work and his cordial relations with the traders. He asked Mr. RYALL to accept the gift from the staff as a token of their esteem and sincere wishes for a happy retirement. Mr. G. R. ABBOT, Mr. H. CHARLTON, Mr. WARDLEY, Mr. GOTT, Mr. STILL, Cartage Foreman ROBINSON and Motor Driver ANDERSON also spoke. Mr. RYALL joined the Company in June, 1889, and after service at Keadby, Worsboro' and Sheffield, came to Grimsby in 1895. He was in turn head of the demurrage section, Timber Superintendent, Chief District Goods Clerk and Goods Agent, Grimsby Town Goods. Among his other activities he was one of the founders of the Cleethorpes Musical Festival, President of the Cleethorpes Bowling League and vice president of several bowling clubs.
The staff in the commercial department at York Goods Station have made a presentation to Mr. T. E. MYERS who has retired after some 45 years' service, 15 of which have been spent in the outward office at York Goods Station. Mr. MYERS is a Teesider and is popular in church and trade union circles.
Mr. Joseph MAW, of the Season Ticket Section, Newcastle D.P.M.O., retired at the end of March, having reached the age limit. Mr. MAW had been in the service for more than 46 years, most of which period had been spent in the Season Ticket Department. He was well known to hundreds of commercial travellers and other season ticket users. At a representative gathering of the staff, Mr. A. S. BUSWELL, District Passenger Manager, presented to Mr. MAW a bowls outfit, (woods, case and shoes), a case of pipes, and an umbrella, together with a Wedgwood bowl for Mrs. MAW. Speeches were made by Mr. A. S. BUSWELL, District Passenger Manager, Mr. J. E. RICHARDSON, Assistant District Passenger Manager, Messrs. H. J. WOOD, W. BEAUTYMAN, A. BLACKETT, A. JOHNSON, T. WEATHERBURN and Miss Vera FOGGAN.
On March 31, after 48 years' service, Mr. William MILBURN, who was senior night clerk in the Parcels Department, Newcastle, retired. He spent 10 years in the Parcels Department at Carlisle with the Joint Stock Companies, and was then appointed to the Parcels Office at Newcastle, where he remained for 38 years. At a smoking concert held in the Royal Hotel, Newcastle, on March 31, Mr. MILBURN was presented with a Westminster chiming clock, two pipes, and an umbrella for Mrs. MILBURN. Mr. W. H. SHANNON, Passenger and Parcels Agent, made the presentations and Messrs. F. HUDSON, H. O. THOMPSON, R. CUMMINS, N. R. WOODCOCK, R. TROTTER, P. BLADES, J. H. WATSON, E. WEIGHTMAN and A. BURTON also spoke.
The retirement of Driver E. PURNELL took place on April 12, after he had completed nearly 47 years continuous service with the N.E. and L.N.E. Railway Companies. Starting as a cleaner in 1892, he later became a fireman and driver. Mr. PURNELL is a native of Scarborough, and will have in his retirement the good wishes of a wide circle of friends who have had contact with him during his long term of railway service.
Mr. H. CORNELL, stationmaster, Goole, who retired on March 31, received the good wishes of his staff when he was presented with an electric table amp. Mr. CORNELL joined the Company as a block learner at Ferryhill on July 16, 1892 and after occupying various posts in the signalling grade was appointed district traffic foreman at Coxhoe Bridge in 1907, since when he has held supervisory posts at South Dock, Gateshead, Sunderland, Leeds and Hull.
On April 15, Mr. J. IMPEY, Carriage and Wagon Department, Hornsey, retired at the age of 65, after 42 years' service as a coachmaker. Mr. IMPEY started work on the old G.N. Railway in June, 1897, at King's Cross, and after a few years at Finsbury Park, was transferred to Hornsey Carriage Sidings where he has been employed for the last 16 years. For several years he has been the appointed representative under the Scheme of Negotiating Machinery for Railway Shopmen at Hornsey, and he was also group secretary of the C. and W. Department H.S.A. On behalf of his colleagues, Foreman C. WRIGHT presented him with a wallet of notes, and wished him a long and happy retirement. Mr. Burt HILLS also spoke.
Mr. G. WRIGHT, acting goods porter (timber), York, retired on March 10, on reaching the age of 65. He started in July, 1900, as a timber loader, and in January, 1920, was appointed timber measurer. Three years later he was again appointed timber loader and has been employed in that capacity and as good porter (timber) until his retirement in March.
Mr. A. SANDER retired on March 31, after having completed 44 years' service. For a number of years Mr. SANDER was employed as a telegraphist in the Telegraph Office, Central station, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and on October 1, 1933, was promoted to supervisor in the same office, which post he occupied until his retirement. Mr. SANDER was presented with a barometer subscribed for by his colleagues. The presentation was made by the Chief Clerk, Mr. G. M. LITTLE, who wished Mr. and Mrs. SANDER many happy years of retirement.
Mr. J. TRENHAM, goods porter, York, retired on April 7, on reaching the age of 65. He entered the Company's service on March 25, 1911, as a goods porter at York. On January 3, 1920, he was appointed a cattle dock porter at Holgate, and on June 14, 1920, again took up the duties of goods porter at York.
Mr. W. HARVEY, loader, York, retired on April 1, on reaching the age of 65 years. He started on July 19, 1902, as a goods porter at York, and on February 10, 1912, was appointed loader at York, in which post he continued until his retirement.
On March 17, Mr. B. MENNELL, townsman, was presented with umbrellas for himself and Mrs. MENNELL, on the occasion of his retirement after 44 years' service. The gifts were presented as a mark of esteem from the commercial staff at Gateshead Goods, and the presentation was made by Mr. T. MILNER, agent. Messrs. NICHOLSON, HENDERSON and FISH endorsed the agent's high opinion of Mr. MENNELL.
Driver G. W. BRAMHAN, Mexborough, who retired on January 17, began as a cleaner at that depot in December, 1894. He was promoted to fireman and transferred to Keadby in October, 1898, returned to Mexborough in May, 1903, and was promoted to driver in January, 1904. Mr. BRAMHAN was elected a member of the Great Central and Joint Lines Friendly Society Committee in June, 1913, which position he held continuously until his retirement, having served over 25 years. He was chairman of this committee for 2 years, and has also held positions as delegate, chairman and trustee of the Mexborough Branch of the N.U.R. He has been treasurer of the Mexborough Driver's and Firemen's Sick Fund since 1910, and was presented with a gold watch for services rendered to this fund in 1927. He was elected a member of the Mexborough Urban District Council in 1919, and is still a member of that body, being chairman in 1927 and 1937. He has been chairman of the Public Health Committee for many years, and also held the chairmanship of many other committees during his 20 years' service on this council, and was appointed permanent J.P., for the West Riding of Yorkshire on January 6, 1930. He is vice-chairman of the Unemployment Committee, a member of the Court of Referees, and a life Governor of the Mexborough Montagu Hospital. Mr. BRAMHAN was presented with a hall barometer by the members of the Great Central and Joint Lines Friendly Society Committee on January 9.
On Februay 16, Mr. P. B. COBB, stationmaster, Newmarket, was presented with a set of bowls with carrier, on the occasion of his retirement on February 21, the presentation being made by Mr. NOBLE, who was supported by Messrs. SAMBROOK, WILSON, MINGAY, FOVARGUE, FITNESS, GINN, VISE and POULTON. A cheque was later received by Mr. COBB from the Trainers' Federation, in appreciation of services rendered. Mr. COBB started as a clerk at Elmswell in 1888, and after filling various positions on the Ipswich District was made stationmaster at Woodham Ferrers in 1912. He was promoted to Haughley in 1914, to Wymondham in 1915 and to Newmarket in 1925.
Mr. A. CLUNIE, Goods Agent, at Waverley, retired on February 25, after having served the Company for 50 years. Mr. CLUNIE joined the old N.B. Company at Newburgh. Later he served at various stations in the Western District, and also in the Plant Superintendent's Office, Glasgow, where he occupied the position of chief clerk. On the introduction of the Train Control, the Plant Superintendent's Office was abolished, and Mr. CLUNIE was moved to the Superintendent's Office in Edinburgh, where he remained until his appointment to the post of Goods Agent at Waverley in June, 1927.
In the presence of a large gathering of the staff at Liverpool Street Parcels Department on February 17, Leading Parcel Porter W. VERRENT received a handsome clock, together with a handbag for his wife, upon his retirement at the age limit, after long service in the department. In making the presentation, Mr. GEESON, agent, wished him many happy years of retirement and good health. He was supported by Mr. W. R. CLARKE and other speakers.
Mr. T. MUSGRAVE, loader (timber), York, retired on March 13, on reaching the age of 65 years. Mr. MUSGRAVE began in April, 1898, as a timber loader. From January, 1920, until April, 1922, he occupied the position of timber measurer, and on the latter date he was again appointed timber loader, which position he held until his retirement.
