Dear Stephen/Dierdre

I see from the Kent family history pages that you are both

researching the Pilcher family. Do you have any connections with a

Herbert Edward Pilcher born in 1846 in Sturry and who married a Fanny

Mead in 1867 ? I recently met someone in Hampshire who has traced

his wife's family from this line and I know he would be interested

if there was any additional information to swap. I myself only came

across him because this Fanny Mead was the cousin of my great great

grandmother, Fanny Mead Court.

I think I forgot to say that they lived in Patrixbourne, near

Canterbury.

Hi. I am also researching Pilcher. I have Harriet Jane PILCHER baptized at

St Pauls Deptford on the 14th March 1824 to parents William and Mary Ann(nee

Sharp). Harriet married Benjamin JOY in 1845 and they came to Australia in

the 1850's. Are there any connections.

Thank you

Dear Deirdre

I cannot see any familiar names in your Pilcher list but I can shed a little light on Pilchers at Rye.

I have an ancestor, Charles Pilcher, who lived there most of his life.

There is a memorial for him in the church in Rye:

Sacred to the memory of Charles Pilcher Esq

who departed this life April XXI MDCCCXLIV

aged LXXVI years

He was a resident of Rye and it's vicinity for LXII years

he left surviving Elizabeth his widow

one son and four daughters

viz. Eliza, Mary Anne, Charles Simmonds,

Anna Maria and Caroline Elizabeth.

This tablet was erected by Elizabeth his widow

as a pious token of love and respect for a kind

husband and an affectionate father

Also to the memory of

Alfred-Simmonds Pilcher

son of the said

Charles and Elizabeth Pilcher

who departed this life July XXV, MDCCCXXXVIII

Aged XXV years

sincerely regretted by his parents and friends

he was a dutiful son and a kind brother

Also to the memory of Elizabeth

widow of the above named Charles Pilcher

who departed this life on the XXVIIth day of May MDCCCLIX

aged LXXXIII years

and was interred at Wadhurst in this county

Mary Anne married Thomas Beale and they lived in various places around

Biddenden. Charles Simmonds married Frances Beale and they farmed near

Tenterden. I don't know what became of the other siblings.

I was recently given the names of publicans in Rye which included:

John Pilcher, Red Lion, 1781-1784

Charles Pilcher, Red Lion, 1784-1788

Charles Pilcher, The Queens's Head, 1788-1794

Thomas Pilcher, The London Trader, 1796-1799

Charles Pitcher (sic - for Pilcher?), coal merchant in The Strand, Rye

I wonder of John, Charles and Thomas are brothers? father and sons? Charles

may be my man - on the memorial he is said to have been in Rye for 62 years

which would take him back to about 1782. On the other hand if it is him he

went up market: the memorial is large and expensive, he farmed just outside

Rye, had votes at Rye and at Woodhouse in Kent (from which he came before

taking up residence inRye? Do you know of Pilchers at Woodhouse?) and his

son Charles Simmonds P was a merchant, farmer and shipowner.

Hi Deirdre

My g-g-grandmother was Ann PILCHER born 1826 in St Margarets Kent. She

married my g-g-grandfather William HOOD of Sutton Kent. Ann died June 10

1917.

Our HOOD family bible also refers to Ann PILCHER who I believe is my

g-g-g-grandmother. She died May 9 1877 aged 78 years.

Also mentioned is Eleanor PILCHER who died July 2 1882 aged 41 years.

Do you have any connections?

Hi Deirdre

I recently read your entry in the Folkestone Family History magazine re

PILCHER. I cannot see any connection with your own line but my 5x great

grandmother was an Anne PILCHER and I thought you might like to add her to

your One Name Study. I do not know much about Anne except that she married

George BROMLEY in Hougham on13.11.1794, and that she was buried in Hougham

Kent on 19.4.1796. George and Anne had one child, Jane BROMLEY born 1795

Ruth Golding has kindly sent me Lots of Hythe snippets re Pilchers...thanks Ruth!

Hello Deirdre

I hadn't realised you were doing a one-name PILCHER study - brave
lady!

Here are some culled from the Calendar of the White & Black Books of
the Cinque Ports 1432 - 1955, pub. HMSO 1966 including the splendidly
named

Alonzo Bilham PILCHER, Alderman in Margate, 1910 and 1911, Alderman
and J.P. 1920, and still an Alderman in 1927. An unnamed PILCHER is
also a Margate Councillor in 1901 (probably the same).

Thomas PILCHER is a Jurat in Hythe in 1828 (don't know whether he is
your Thomas).

Thomas PILCHER is a Jurat in Fordwich in 1649.

There is also this entry in the General Brotherhood or Guestling held
at New Romney on 24 July 1655:

"Wilcocke KNIGHT gent. of Lydd petitions that Thomas STRONGHILL in
Michaelmas term last delivered 'a lease of eiectment' for the moiety
of a messuage and land at Lydd to Henry IMPETT ' living remote in the
countie' and caused Impett to bring an action in the Common Bench at
Westminster against PILCHER 'a common eiector' who gave the petitioner
notice. The House is informed that as soon as STRONGHILL 'was
sensible of the priviledge of the ports in this case he surceased his
said proceedings', and William STRATFOLD has promised that STRONGHILL
should not proceed. Ordered that the fine of 10 li. shall be respited
and that STRONGHILL shall appear at the next Brotherhood to show cause
why he should not pay."

No, don't ask - I haven't a clue what it means!

Subj: Pilcher One-Name Study

Hello Deidre,
I note your study of surname Pilcher, I have a few rather oblique references to this name going back to SHARDELOW via BILHAM in Norfolk and Suffolk.

If you think there is a connection I will send you what I have.

Gerry
I think the easiest way for me to send you the little I have is in the form of a chart.

Rayner Pilcher = Harriet Bilham
| born Kenninghall, Norfolk.
Alonzo = ?
|
Roland
It would seem that Rayner Pilcher was the Registrar in Margate and that it was his habit to purchase a new handkerchief for each wedding he conducted which is how he met Harriet Bilham who worked in the handerchief and glove department of a store by the name of Rapsons.

A nice story none of which I can vouch for but the author of the book was a cousin of Roland's and firmly believed it.
Harriet Pilcher ne'e Bilham was a daughter of Thomas Bilham and Dinah
Pilgrim / Shardelow [ she was known by both names because her parents were not married].
I hope all this is of some interest, I do not have any more on the Pilcher family
but quite a bit on the Pilgrim/Shardelows.

HI,

I am trying to track down my great great great grandfather who was supposedly

a Ship Builder in Rye, Sussex. He was from the Playden, Rye area. His name

was Charles Pilcher and his wife was named Elizabeth. The time period would

have been around late 1700-early 1800.

Thanks,

Hello Deirdre

Quite prolific, your Pilchers!

With the proviso that the years before 1812 were difficult to read

with some very faint pages indeed, here are the results:

Baptism dates of children of Thomas & Hannah Pilcher. St. Leonard,

Hythe

illegible son 11th February 1807

(This said to Thomas and *Anne* Pilcher)

James son 30th September 1809

Thomas son 16th August 1812

John Frederic son 29th June 1814 Gardener

John son 27th March 1816 Gardener

Harriet dau 8th August 1818 Gardener

George son 26th December 1819 Gardener

Charles Henley son 15th June 1823 Gardener

Jane dau 8th March 1825 Gardener

(This said to Thomas and *Anna* Pilcher)

Mary Margaret dau 13th April 1828

So I haven't found your Charles (1801) or your Hannah (1816). I will

try again, because it really is possible to miss things. The film

quality is not good.

I also found a considerable number of children born to the following

parents:

Thomas & Elizabeth Pilcher 5 children from 1803 - 1813

Jno/John & Sarah Pilcher 6 children from 1804 - 1820

George & Margot/Margaret Pilcher 5 children from 1811 -1821 (Labourer

then Brewer)

George & Susannah Pilcher 5 children from 1821 - 1833 (Labourer then

Carrier)

Stephen & Elizabeth Pilcher 2 children 1812 - 1813 (Shoemaker)

George & Ann Pilcher 1 dau 1816 (Labourer)

Thomas & Harriet Pilcher 4 children 1835 - 1843 (Labourer)

Sarah (probably George & Margot's eldest daughter) Pilcher 1 base born

dau 1830

George & Mary 1 son 1836 (Labourer)

Thomas & Mary 3 children 1836 - 1843 (Gardener)
