Emails cont. 2000-2001

From: Ross [positive@eisa.net.au] 27/11/98

I obtained your email address from Ruth Golding who, in turn, contacted me re

my enquiry for information on the Gordon-Cumming and Pilcher families in the

Hythe UK area.

Members of my family have only recently started to trace our family tree and

we obtained our Great-GM death certificate which shows her mother as a "Ann

Pilcher" and her father as "William Charles Gordon-Cumming". Our G-GM

(Charlotte Byrne) was born in Hythe 1856/57 and married George Byrne there

in 1872/73. As Hythe appears to be a small town(even by Australian

standards) I would imagine that our "Pilchers" would be related and I would

appreciate any information that you deem relevant.

Hoping to hear from you soon...Jane Vecchio (positive@eisa.net.au)

HI,

I am trying to trace my great great great grandmother's family. Her name was

Mary Ann Pilcher and her father was Charles Pilcher. They lived in the Rye

area.

Does this sound familiar?

Hello,

Are your Pilchers from Kent by some chance? My Pilcher family left

Sandwich,

Kent for Maryland about 1682.

Hi Deirdre.

I note your research into Pilcher, and wonder if you have accumulated

any material on Pilcher and Goldsack of Margate in the middle 1800's.

This business is shown as Builder and Undertaker in Pigootts 1839

directory, also Wheelwright. I believe it was also in a Kelly's

directory later.

My gt.x 3 grandfather was Isaac Goldsack, a partner in the business.

He was a master carpenter.

I would be most grateful if you could enlighten me regarding the

founding and operation of this business which operated from an

address on King St. in Margate.

Thanks in advance

What kind of software do you use to record your family tree listings. If it

is Family Tree Maker I will send you a copy of the disk. (5.0) I have a

little over a hundred names. Mine starts out with Stephen in England. I

would like to find out more about the Pilcher's in Culpepper, VA and in

Scyley County Ga.

Thanks Charles Pilcher

(note from Deirdre - I use Family Tree Maker, version 6 mainly, but also have Generations. Any file in .ged (gedcom) is acceptable, + any FTM/FTW of course!)

Hi Deirdre

It has been suggested that I write to you, because you may be able to help

me with an ancestor that I have recently stumbled across.

Her name was Elizabeth Pilcher, and I know that she married a Ingram Willis

in 1800 in Kingston, Kent. Unfortunately, this is as far as I have managed

to get as yet. They lived at Barham at some point because this is where

their son Thomas Willis was born in 1810.

I would be most grateful to know if you have come across this lady.

Hi,

Fascinating site, but then I am biased!

My name, as you can see, is Matthew Percy Pilcher, only son of Brian Percy

Pilcher, I also have a sister, Aline.

My father's father was Percy Travers Pilcher, born 1900 ish and died in

1974. His father was Algernon Percy Pilcher (I think). You will not be

surprised to know that we are the part of the family sprung from the aviator

and inventor of the 'Hawk' and the 'Beetle'.

You may be able to cast some light on a family mystery... as far as we know

the family is originally from Northumberland, and a significant portion

moved to Kent. It is our understanding that we picked up the Percy (which

goes back further than I've been able to divine) as the result of a 'wrong

side of the blanket' affair between a member of the Percy family (Dukes of

Northumberland) and a humble wench (a Pilcher). Any views?

I would be very interested to hear from you.

I have Hogbens at Lyminge but there were three separate lines there. This is

not my line. John and Charlotte moved away from Lyminge but returned by 1881

with several children. I suspect that I do not have all of them. If you

would like the names I have found I can supply my census findings for 1881

and 1891.

I don't think I'm going to have much time to search the earlier fiche for

Pilchers at the moment. Let me know if you have any specific enquiries and

I'll probably be able to fit them in.

I am conducting a one-name study of VALDER, they appear to originate at

Sandwich in about 1690 then spread to other parts of Kent including Deal,

Margate, Lyminge and Folkestone. If you come across any please let me know.

Best of luck with your researching

Hi!

My name is Vernon Pilcher and I live in Kent, Great Britain.

I know that the name originates from the Norman conquest when it was 'de Pilcherie' (may not be correct spelling) and there are still Pilcher descendants living near Battle in Sussex (where the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066!).
I am 25 and my family came from a village called Doddington in Kent where they resided since Victorian times. I know my father (Ivan Pilcher) knows more about our family history so please get back to me if this is of any interest to you.

Good luck with your information collection!

Hello Jo
My interest is really anything Pilcher pre c1750.After then I get a bit "focussed" down a particular line.If you have any early info on your grandmother Pilcher's family I would be interested.I keep them on an old computer which doesnt have Email unfortunately.

I expect she stems from what I call "the Dover Pilchers" which I think originate from:-
11 (or more?) siblings born 1739/1752 at Dover ( I have their names if you are interested ,but havent got details of their marriages ,children etc).
They were the Children of John Pilcher b 1706 (? at Cheriton) m (1) Mary Webb @ Dover 14/4/1733 (2) Ann Lawrence @ Dover 27/12/1737.His will was dated 1788.
John was the son of John Pilcher b 14/6/1671 @ Lydden m Elizabeth Kingsford @ Sheperdswell ( same living as Coldred) 21/9/1700. died 6/5/1744 @ Cheriton.
John was the son of Stephen Pilcher b 9/5/1630 @ Lydden.m Ann(a). bur Lydden 26/1/1672/3
Stephen was the son of Nicholas Pilcher b 15/10/1598 @Lydden. m Elizabeth Coolye @ Sheperdswell 16/10/1626.d Lydden 5/7/1669.
Nicholas was the son of Jesse Pilcher ,m Suzanne. ( see mention in his fathers Will of 1523)
Jesse was the son of Stephen Pilcher of Coldred who married Rose & whose Will was dated May 1523 & so was probably born in the 1400s.
That is as far as I can go.

Thanks for the additional info. From what little I have reviewed it

looks as if most Pilchers came from SE UK, is that right? Of interest,

How's the move going?

Also, i can't remember if i sent you the photocopies. Did you get them ok?

Dear Deirdre,
I saw your e.mail address on the Kent Surname Interests List and wondered if you can see a connection.

My Gt grandfather was George Pilcher born 2nd January 1852, died January 1921.

He married Sarah Anne Hammond (daughter of a baliff) 1874 at Wingham (Near Canterbury).

My grandfather Lyster William Pilcher was born 4 February 1880 at Tankerton (near Whitstable).  He married my grandmother Rosamond Elizabeth Alexander in June 1904 at Herne Bay.  My mother grew up at Herne Bay but they moved to Micham, Surrey in 1926.

Both my Gt Grandfather and Grandfather were carpenters, cabinet makers and I have been told originated from Womenswold in Kent.  In later life my grandfather had his own factory designing interiors for ambulances.   He was an officer in the Army during the second World war and was also was in France in the 1st World war at the age of 17.  He died in 1945 and is buried at North Cheam Cemetry.  Have lots of information on relatives.  Can you see a connection with your family.

I have been tracing back the Pilcher line which started in Kent England and ended up in Georgia/USA. I have info that our ancestor was Stephan Pilcher born about 1600 in Lyminge, Kent, England. He died in Jul 1684 in England. He married Jane Bubberis and had a child named Stephan Pilcher born 1675?(not sure if we are missing a generation) in Sandwick, Kent, England. He died in Stafford County Virginia USA and married Mary Jane Mason. I know more info about the remainder of our line. Do you have any info on these people? I am not familiar with England to know those locations. Are there still Pilchers in that area of England? I would appreciate any help you can provide. I enjoy your site. Dear  Deirdre,
Thought I'd add some of my Pilchers to your list. Hope  they are useful.
Stephen Pilcher was born on 13 October 1832 in Wychling Kent. He was the son of Stephen (born 24/4/1794 in Wychling) and Ann McPharlane (born 1790 in Wychling)
Stephen , the son travelled with his father, sister, Susan and brother John to New Zealand when he was 11 years old. He later travelled to Australia and married Mary Jane Rowe on 29 February 1858 in Maryborough, Victoria , Australia. Stephen followed the gold rush in 1852 and then farmed at Pilchers Bridge , near Bendigo in
His children were
George b 29 March 1859
William Thomas b 29 July 1860 (my great grandfather)
Elizabeth Ann b 23 October 1862
Emma b 11 October 1864
Selena b 19 March 1866
Alfred b 14 December 1868
Ellen Matilda b 17 October 1871
Mary Jane  b 31 December 1873
Stephen John b 8 February 1876
Albert Ambrose b 8 August 1878
Frederick Arthur b28 October 1881
Florence Rachel b 7 August 1884

We have a very large Pilcher book which was produced in New Zealand by the Pilcher relatives there. It was published in 1993 and by the time I bought my copy there were only hardcovers left. It cost around $160 (Australian) which was quite a lot of money but I have found it very useful. The publishers are Rex and Adrienne Evans, Evagean Publishing, 266 Shaw Rd, Titirangi Auckland New Zealand. The book has 674 pages in it so it is quite large. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know.

Hello Deirdre,

We notice from the KFHS mailing list that you are researching the surname

PILCHER. One of our 5 x great grandmothers was Susanna PILCHER, who married

Thomas SHAXTED 27th May 1729 at Ickham. So far we know of the following

children born to Thomas and Susanna, all of whom were baptised at

Wickhambreaux:

William bapt. 14th October 1729

Thomas bapt. 12th November 1732

Susannah bapt. 11th April 1736

Elizabeth bapt. 9th August 1738

George bapt. 14th August 1744

Susanna's husband died 1748/49, and she was remarried 10th December 1752 at

St. Andrew's church, Canterbury to Robert BEALE (also widowed).

Susanna's son, George SHAXTED, married Sarah EPPS 20th April 1771 at St.

Nicholas at Wade, and their eight known children were baptised at Ickham.

Their son George is our 3 x great grandfather. If you have more information

regarding Susanna PILCHER and her ancestors, we would love to hear from you.

In return, we can supply details of her descendants, if they are of interest

to you.

Bye for now and best wishes,

Dear Deirdre

Does your database of Pilchers include the following I turned up on the IGI

site:

John Pilcher and Charlotte ---, bap John Godier Simmonds Pilcher on 21 Aug

1825 at St Dunstans, Stepney

John Godier Simmonds Pilcher and Clarinda Pyman bapt John William Godier

Pilcher on 8 March 1850 at St Philip the Apostle, Stepney

John William Godier Pilcher marrying Eleanor May Courtney on 7 Aug 1870 at

St Luke, Chelsea.

I am interested because my GG grandfather was Charles Simmonds Pilcher of

Rye (1806-1863). The middle name of Simmonds suggests a relationship with

the Pilchers in London.

Any thoughts?

Hello Deirdre, Thanks for responding. Well can't tell you much; the only

PILCHER I have so far is Harriet b abt1825 wife of Thomas MOODY b1824

Ramsgate and mother of Elizabeth b1859 Ramsgate, these details taken from

Elizabeth's marriage certificate who is my great-grand mother. I was not

able to find either of the parents on the 81 census or the marriage on the

IGI, so a bit of a blank at the moment though I've not concentrating to much

on that line of late. Can you help with any PILCHERs around that time and

area?

All the best.

Hi Deirdre

Below are the details of the Pilcher I have in my line.

Charlotte Elizabeth Pilcher, born Oct-Dec 1838 in the Eastry registration

district, daughter of Henry Pilcher, mother not known as yet (awaiting

cert). Married Henry Laurence(Lawrence) in the Staple parish church on 14

Oct 1858. Two of the witnesses at the wedding were also Pilchers, namely

Mary Ann, and William, but what relationship to Charlotte is not known.

Please feel free to use the information entirely as you see fit. Are there

any connections to your Pilcher lines at all?

Regards,

Vicki Lawrence

I just found your web site. I have several hundred names, maybe 1500 or

so, in my database, back to John Pilcher of Coldred, a will dated 1523,

from whom I am descended. Family left the Newington area about 1852 for

Illinois.

If I can figure out how to get my data into gedcom and move it to you,

I'd be happy to.

Thomas Pilcher mar. Susanna Ridden. His sons William and Bayley came to

Illinois. William's son Franklin Preble Pilcher is my grandfather, died

1930.

Note from Deirdre....I've included another one from Chuck on the basis that it MIGHT help someone else....and yes, it DID work!

That sounds good to me! :-)

Depending what genealogy program you use...usually you just choose  the 'save

as' option, which should show a sub menu of the file type ...then  choose

save as 'Chuck'.ged (minus the quote marks of course!)

Then, send it to me, please!

Thanks Deirdre<
