Coromandel from Bay Of Islands is about 6 hours driving and 250 miles, but it's very easy and scenic yet again. Driving around the Coromandel Peninsula is superb as it follows the coast virtually all the way around. Part of state highway (SH25) is unsealed (i.e. gravel !).

Kuaotunu Bay Lodge is a wonderful place to spend a couple of nights, and within easy reach of Cathedral Cove, Whitianga and Hot Water Beach. As there is very little street lighting, and with a clear night, the stars are a spectacular sight. The clear air allows an incredible amount to be seen.

Cathedral Cove - is about a 40 minute walk from this vantage point.

Cathedral Cove

Cathedral Cove - it certainly is well worth the walk, but take some refreshments, as there isn't any there !

Hot Water Beach. This is a strange place ! Hot water beach springs (originally called Orua Springs) are only noticable 2 hours either side of low tide. Digging a shallow hole finds the springs. They are from underground volcanic reservoirs, and reach temperatures of over 60C, which is easily enough to burn !
