Plaw Hatch Seeds

At Plaw Hatch Farm both vegetable and flower seeds are grown every year. In an effort to supply Biodynamic horticultural seeds to Biodynamic growers in the UK, Peter Brinch has been growing horticultural seeds to Demeter standards. These are sent to Stormy Hall Demeter Seed Company where they get cleaned, tested, packed and sold via the Company’s seed catalogue.The availability of Biodynamic seeds is essential as most Biodynamic farm and garden crops require the use of organic and Biodynamic seed.

Some farm and garden seed saving should be considered to be an activity belonging to the seasonal Biodynamic work for several reasons:

• To establish a greater variety of Biodynamically produced seeds.
• To adapt varieties to regional areas that suit climatic and Geological conditions. These adapted varieties can respond better to the use of the Biodynamic preparations.
• This method of seed saving involves the selection of individual plants which then leads to an increase in the Biodiversity of food plants; this is something which is badly needed.
• Likewise, all farmers and gardeners should take some responsibility for the diversity of food and fodder plants and thus become less dependant on big multinational seed companies for their seeds.

The Biodynamic seed work can be seen to be just as important as the development of soil fertility and animal feed in the context of a healthy sustainable farm or garden organism.
