The term regimenthad several uses in the British Army, but mainly it was used to.-

Designate a combat arm such as "The Royal Regiment of Artillery". or

Represent a parent organization for a number of infantry battalions such as "The West Yorkshire Regiment". This may include any number of infantry battalions, which have neither fought, or trained together, but have the historic regimental name in common.

An infantry regiment at this time was a parent organization only, and as such had no tactical function. During war, the War Establishments assign newly organized battalions, to a regiment generally according to geographical origin.

The infantry battalion was the basic combat unit, where infantry battalions are assigned to brigades for operational purposes without regards to regimental unity.

There were 5 general types of battalion.-

Rifle battalion.

Machine gun battalion.

Motor battalion.

Motorised battalion (carried in RASC transport).

Divisional reconnaissance battalion.
