The Story Of 46 Division during WW2

Final Days

Italy for the Final Time

April in Italy saw the final stage of the Italian campaign preparing. The division was ordered back from Greece, and to join with the Eighth Army ready to take part in the attack on the Venetian Line, north of the River Po.

Many of the division were already around the rich farmland of Forli and Bertinoro, while the rest of the division were still travelling north by road and ship, when the surrender in Italy came.

The Germans had been badly beaten south of the Po River, so that they were not able to organize any defence north of the Po. The final surrender of the German Forces in Italy came on 2nd May 1945

Austria

Two months after the surrender, 46 Division moved to the occupational zone in the Styria region of Austria. Here it fully upheld its great reputation, with a variety of tasks undertaken, many of them new and unfamiliar, in a Europe now trying to recover from war.
