[4.01 "Ambush"] Carter restarts his residency - now he is back in the ER. [4.02 "Something New"] Carter gets stuck with an inept, undedicated med student, George Henry. [4.03 "Friendly Fire"] Carter suspects Maggie Doyle of giving Anna DelAmico preferential treatment. She is getting lot of cool patients and he isn't. He suspects that Doyle is expressing favoritism because of her 'alleged' lesbianism. [4.04 "When The Bough Breaks"] Carter's patience with Benton's snubs comes to an end and he confronts him. [4.05 "Good Touch, Bad Touch"] Carter clashes with Dale, and wonders if leaving surgery was a good option. [4.06 "Ground Zero"] Carter takes Carol to dinner with his grandmother, who provides funding for the clinic. Anna also attends, and is angry with Carter for hiding his family wealth, particularly when she sees a painting of him on the stairs. [4.07 "Fathers and Sons"] [4.08 "Freak Show"] Carter and Anna are working on someone's shoulder. He is concerned that she is still angry with him, but she keeps denying it. In the meantime, Henry (Carter's student) returns to the ER. He wants Carter to give him a 'pass' for his ER rotation, but unfortunately Carter is less than forthcoming! That means that Henry is again stuck in the ER, with Carter again (Anna still doesn't want him). Henry turns out to be a hyperchondriac as well as a pathetic doctor, and his incompetance means extra work for Carter and Anna. One patient that they take over from Henry causes a disagreement between them - Carter wants to try surgery, while Anna thinks it can be treated medically. Carter goes with Anna's suggestion, feeling that it is necessary to reassure her that he is not doing it just to please her. Suddenly Henry collapses in the middle of being shown how to put in a chest tube. Carter and Anna ignore him for a few moments, but then discover that he is experiencing a severe allergic reaction to latex, and they both treat him. On his recovery, Henry declares that he had a near death experience and is extremely thankful towards his two benefactors. (Based on Lisa Albert's review on the alt.tv.er FAQ) [4.09 "Obstruction of Justice"] Carter refuses to perform drug and alcohol tests on a woman accused of running over her husband (her story is somewhat different). Carter gets arrested and driven away, mug shots are taken of him, and he is charged with obstruction of justice. He can't bail himself out (despite it only being $100) because he doesn't have that much cash and so it is left to Anna to come to his rescue. In the meantime, an intimidating man in his cell shows him some kind of lesion on his inner thigh! When 'rescued' Carter and Anna kiss. [4.10 "Do You See What I See?"] Henry is back again, and Carter is not thrilled! And his grandparents have also informed him that they will visit the hospital that day. Henry, after his previous problems, is impatient to finish with his ER rotation and wants to get a procedure and get out. So he and Carter work on Vinnie Capoziello, a heart attack patient. Unfortunately he dies, but he speaks just before his death, saying "I love you Maria". Henry has never intubated anyone, so Carter decides to let him try it out on the corpse. However, while Henry is attempting this, his brother walks in, and assumes that Vinnie is still alive. They have to pretend that the operation to save his life is still going on, take the man outside, pretend he has died and then go and talk to his family. Henry attempts to comfort Mrs. Capoziello by telling her what Vinnie's last words were. Unfortunately, it is discovered that Maria is actually Vinnie's brother's wife. In the meantime, Carter's grandmother Millicent and his cousin Chase arrive at the hospital. Millicent is there to check out the clinic, and Chase is dressed as Santa to hand out presents. Carter and Chase discuss the fact that their grandfather usually does the Santa bit, but Carter is relieved that he isn't there so he won't have to defend his choice to be a doctor again. Later Carter is looking for Chase, and finds him in the limo shooting up. Carter realizes that the "spider bite" was a cover, and tells his cousin that he is stupid. Chase says he's not a junkie, and tells Carter to mind his own business. Millicent arrives and they leave, after she tells Carter to come early to dinner because his grandfather wants to speak to him. Later Carter finds Anna, and upon discovering that she will be alone, suggests they do something together. He tells her "I've had enough of my family for one day". (Based on Lisa Albert's review on the alt.tv.er FAQ) [4.11 "Think Warm Thoughts"] Carter begins his day lecturing to a group of second year med students. The lectures are part of a series that the students go through to choose specialties. Carter finds that most aren't interested in ER, they want to know things like "do people really come in with items stuck in their rectum" and "have you ever killed someone". Carter talks to Benton, who is also stuck doing a lecture about surgery. Benton says that it is pointless, and tells Carter that his response to the "kill someone" question is always "only med students". One student, Laura Brown, recognizes Carter from the PBS documentary. She had attended Benton's lecture, but wants to listen to the ER lecture too. She is curious to know if it is never boring there. After the lecture she tells Carter she'd like to "tagalong" with him someday. Carter tells her he is working tonight, and he invites her out to dinner before his shift. As Laura and Carter are walking back to the hospital from dinner, they find a homeless man passed out, they think a victim of hypothermia. Mark and Carter work on the patient, and discover that he is just drunk. Carter is preparing a "banana bag" IV, and is telling Laura about it. She disappears to watch Benton put in a chest tube. Carter later laments to Mark that he wasn't very inspiring to Laura, or the rest of the students that he lectured. Mark tells Carter that "it's the sum of the total that counts - not the passion". (An excerpt from Lisa Albert's review on the alt.tv.er FAQ) [4.12 "Sharp Relief"] Carter's cousin Chase visits him in the ER. He has been off heroin for two days, and is experiencing withdrawal. He asks for medicine, but Carter refuses, saying that he will get him into detox. Chase refuses and leaves. Anna overhears their conversation, and tells Carter she is experienced in this. Anna's friend in med school had a drug problem, and she doesn't think he knows what he is in for. Carter dismisses her. Later Cynthia tells Carter that Chase has called many times. Carter decides to go over to take care of him, and asks Mark for a day off, siting a family problem. Anna sees him leave and again cautions him, but Carter again dismisses him. At Chases' apartment, the place is a mess, and Chase is not doing well. His dealer shows up, and Carter kicks him out. Chase again refuses to go into rehab, so Carter agrees to stay with him through the withdrawal. Just as the withdrawal is getting really bad, Anna shows up with medicine. She brings compazine, clonidine, and propanolol, and Carter starts an IV. Anna talks to Carter, and tells him that the "friend" in med school was actually her boyfriend. He thanks her for coming; having realized that he was out of his league in dealing with Chase. (An excerpt from Lisa Albert's review on the alt.tv.er FAQ) [4.13 "Carter's Choice"] Morning begins as Carter is trudging through the snowstorm, as "Walking on the Sun" is playing. He sees things are slow in the ER and checks on Anna as she is asleep. She wakes up and he agrees to go get her breakfast. However they both quickly go attend to an incoming trauma, a guard with multiple gunshot wounds. He had stopped the serial rapist from raping an elderly woman, and was shot in the process. He had been shot almost twenty minutes prior to arriving at the hospital; the ambulance was slowed down by the storm. The police are hopeful about catching the guy, since they believe that the guard shot him. Anna and Carter stabilize the guard, and prepare to transfer him to the OR. However, he crashes as they are approaching the elevator, and Mark goes with them back to the trauma. They are unable to save him, and Mark tells a reluctant Carter to call it. The attempted rape victim is brought in next. She has multiple contusions; the rapist had "tried to strangle her, than pushed her down a flight of stairs". Anna and Carter treat her, they discover that she wasn't raped. Carter tells Anna that he hopes someone finds the rapist and "takes him out back and shoots him and throws his body in a dumpster". The rapist is eventually brought in; a nineteen-year-old guy named Jack Miller. He has a gun shot wound to the chest and multiple dog bites from the warehouse where he was hiding. The police comment that if the dogs hadn't been called off that he wouldn't have lasted another twenty minutes. No one in the ER is particularly anxious to treat him. Anna and Carter work on him and Anna reminds Carter that he needs blood. Carter discovers that the blood is still delayed at O'Hare airport due to the snowstorm, and that the remaining four units of O negative are all that the ER has. He decides to auto- transfuse the patient instead, using the blood draining out of him to put back in him. Anna argues that it isn't enough blood, but Carter does it anyway. Mark checks on them and seems surprised that Carter did that procedure. Mark assesses that the patient is stable, and they transfer him up to the OR. Chase arrives at the ER, clean and sober, and feeling better than the previous episode. Chase thanks Carter and Anna; Anna says a quick hello and leaves. Chase encourages Carter to go after her. Carter does, and he and Anna argue over Jack's treatment. Anna asks him twice if he withheld treatment, and Carter denies it. Later that night, Anna finds Carter waiting for her at her apartment. Carter tells her "I wanted him to die". Carter couldn't stand the thought of the blood being used on the rapist, and not being there in case some deserving patient showed up. Carter says, "If he died, I don't know how I'd feel, but I can't say I'm sorry. Was that wrong?" Anna tells him no. Carter asks her if she is sure, Anna takes his hand and says, "I'm not sure". (An excerpt from Lisa Albert's review on the alt.tv.er FAQ) [4.14 "Family Practice"] [4.15 "Exodus"] Carter is examining a patient with glaucoma, a Dr. George Bikel, retired science teacher. Suddenly he smells the chemical Benzene, and tells Carter that it is highly toxic. The smell comes from workers brought in from a chemical plant. Many of the staff have been overcome with the fumes, and the chemical is everywhere. Carter calms everyone down, and takes charge - sending all contaminated patients and staff to the ambulance bay. The others, including Anna, go to the cafeteria. Hazardous Materials arrive to start the decontamination - explaining that the "warm zone" is where people are to be decontaminated (showered) - while the ER is in the "hot zone", and that noone is allowed to go into either of these zones without a protective suit. Harriet Spooner appoints Carter the acting medical officer in Kerry's absence. Outside, Carter is forced to go into the "warm zone" to treat a man overcome with chest pains and shortness of breath. He then has to get decontaminated and returns to find one of his patients has died from an inoperable triple vessel disease. Shortly the ER is decontaminated and Kerry again takes control - realising that the true story would create a lack of faith in the ER's ability to cope, she wants Carter to emphasize the following of a "well-rehearsed disaster plan". The Head of Hazardous Materials is really impressed by Carter and extremely surprised to learn that he is only an intern. Mark arrives, and Carter explains what he has missed. [4.16 "My Brother's Keeper"] Carter is busy helping an old man find his daughter in San Francisco when a group of heroin overdoses are brought in. Anna suddenly realises that one of the ODs is Carter's cousin Chase. He's been in respiratory arrest for twenty minutes, but Carter makes a heroic effort to save him. Then he sends him up to intensive care and orders an EEG, which then reveals that Chase has brain damage. His parents are in Singapore, but Carter's grandparents are coming in. Anna is concerned about Carter, but Carter says he is OK (although he clearly isn't). When his grandparents arrive, and Carter tells them what's going on, his grandfather angrily demands to know if he knew about the heroin use. Carter tells them about trying to detox Chase at his apartment, which his grandfather snears at - saying that he should have gone to them. They leave, but his grandmother returns later and talks to John, saying that she thinks he blames them for the kind of life that they had. The episode ends with Carter waiting by his cousin's bed. [4.17 "A Bloody Mess"] Carter helps Chase cope with his disability. [4.18 "Gut Reaction"] It is the day of the ER banquet, and Carol Hathaway thinks Carter should invite Anna DelAmico. He invites her as a friend, and she agrees, but later she donates bone marrow and seems too exhausted to go out at all. However, in the end she does indeed go, and she and Carter sit and chat while everyone gets drunk around them. [4.19 "Shades of Gray"] Carter has now cut himself off from his family's money, and is now starting to get used to being poor. [4.20 "Of Past Regret and Future Fear"] Carter's Grandmother wants to put Chase in a facility, but Carter feels that his cousin is still responsive enough for further treatment. His Grandmother suspects that Carter is trying to ease his conscience rather than to do what is best for Chase. Later, in the ER, Carter and Anna treat a patient who seems to be both physically and mentally disabled. He seems to try to speak, but they simply cannot understand him. Gradually, they figure out that he is trying to talk to them, and they finally understand that he wants them to call someone. When a woman arrives with regard to this case, she has no trouble understanding him, and she tells them that he is a Professor at the University. Carter's Grandmother returns and tells him that she has decided to go with his opinion. Carter and Anna chat about the possibility of a relationship, but then she leaves with her ex-boyfriend Max Rosher, who has just appeared to pick her up from work. Carter watches as they leave. [4.21 "Suffer the Little Children"] Anna DelAmico's ex-boyfriend Max Rosher appears in the ER to do a report on the possibility of a Paediatric Attending Physician, much to Carter's distaste. He thinks the interloper is trouble, particularly because of his history of drug abuse. [4.22 "A Hole in the Heart"] Some drugs go missing in the ER, and Carter suspects Max. He brings up the subject with Anna, and she is less than impressed with him. He seems to suggest that the ER is no longer the place for him...... |
