Probationer PC Ben Hayward is the relief's youngest member at just 20 years old. Fresh from the Met's training school at Hendon, Ben is confident and enthusiastic. He eventually hopes to work in the drugs squad. He stands out at Sun Hill, being from a middle class background, unlike fellow probationer, PC Roz Clarke.

At school, Ben was one of life's easy achievers. He got top grades in his GCSE's, and went on to study for four A-levels, also gaining high scores. He was offered many University places, but chose instead to take a gap year, and became involved in the Club scene. His gap year turned into two, and he became mixed up with sex and drugs. Unfortunately, his younger sister Jules followed her brother's example, and copied his experiments with drugs. Devastatingly, she died as a result, and his family was torn apart. For this reason, he joined the Met.

At Hendon, he showed his skills in the academic and behavioural studies, but was put on section 15 for attitude (he's just misunderstood) Due to his high ambitions, he lacks interest in the more day to day duties of policing, and this is sometimes mistook for laziness. While he is extremely intelligent academically, he may well have run-ins with his superiors about his discipline and unruliness, and has shown himself to be a little too quick off the mark, not thinking before jumps.
