Introduction

Poor quality listening is the norm in British society. Social interaction is rarely about careful listening and communicating that listening is taking place. It is highly unusual to come into contact with a person who can listen accurately and communicate unambiguously that they are listening. Good listening is so uncommon that many people are taken aback when they encounter it, and some people are even frightened.

By identifying what constitutes poor quality listening, recognising the ways in which you listen poorly, and understand some of the reasons why you listen poorly, you are then in a good position to learn to listen well.
