Assignment 2
Tape and Commentary I
Purpose of the assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to review and analyse your counselling practice.
Procedure for the assignment
Utilising the headings (and subheadings) pinpointed below, write a structured report of 750 (± 250) words that describes clearly and in detail the observed practice session.
Tape selection
Select a 15 minute length of tape that demonstrates your current competence at counselling.
Written commentary
Write a commentary regarding the observed counselling practice session, considering the following points:
1. A brief introduction, giving the date of the observed counselling practice session, and how many times you had previously listened to this speaker.
2. The contractual context of the observed counselling practice session.
3. What the observed counselling practice session achieved for the speaker.
4. Non-verbal communication:
Body language of speaker.
Your own body language: strengths and shortcomings.
5. Verbal interventions: identification and naming of counselling skills.
6. Detailing how you a) were able to communicate, b) failed to communicate, the core conditions
empathic understanding
genuineness / congruence
unconditional positive regard
7. What you might do differently, were you conducting the observed counselling practice again.
8. What additional things you might have done, were you conducting the observed counselling practice again, and to what purpose.
9. List of references, giving full bibliographical details, including author, year of publication, (title of article if in a journal), title of publication, name of publisher, place of publication.
10. Appendix: transcript of interventions.
