This section of my website consists of detailed lecture notes for the counselling training courses I teach. Some of the material focuses solely on personal development / self-understanding, whereas other material is more theoretical about counselling, counselling practice and issues concerning mental health. Whilst some of the material is solely informative, most of the material involves questions, exercises and activities (which is typical of the way that I teach).
To date, I have uploaded only a small fraction of the material I have written, in order to learn both how to present uploaded material most effectively, and also to understand in what ways the uploaded material is being used.
I confess to having mixed feelings about placing this material in the public domain. On the one hand, I want the people I teach to have full and convenient access to the course material they encounter. Moreover, my socio-political aspirations favour and generosity of spirit and a world in which everyone is empowered with interpersonal skills. On the other hand, these documents represent the hard currency by which I attempt to earn my living through teaching. I have too much experience of people, including staff from hospitals and other statutory sector agencies, attending courses I teach with the openly-expressed intention of collecting my documentation so that they (and others) can subsequently 'cascade' it throughout their own organisation. The ethical option would be that the institution hired me to teach this material. Instead, the actions of these people and their agencies demonstrate that they consider it ethically acceptable to take my material and evade paying me to deliver it. I ask that you respect fully the limitations I have placed on the use of this documentation.
