Counselling Supervision: Aspects
![]()
A counselling supervisor attempts to keep in sight at least eight different aspects of the counselling supervision.
1. The case history of the client, including reasons for the counselling, path of referral, previous counselling and other support.
2. The theoretical approach of the counsellor, as well as the interventions, skills and techniques used by the counsellor.
3. The (quality and stage of the) counsellor’s relationship with client.
4. The counsellor her/himself as a person, including what is happening to/for them, e.g. illness, bereavement, divorce.
5. The counsellor’s relationship with the counselling supervisor, which may be impacted on by the relative difference in experience between the counsellor and counselling supervisor.
6. The counselling supervisor her/himself as a person.
7. The organisational context of the counselling, e.g. GP practice, occupational health, bereavement agency, as well as the place given to counselling within the organisation.
8. The national perspective, both regulation by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and how counselling is viewed in the printed and broadcast media.
