Cinema & Movies: Italy, Spain, Brazil

 Italy

What is an Italian film? Franco Zeffirelli makes movies with strong English connections, such as Tea with Mussolini and Romeo and Juliet. I should like to watch some more of Zeffirelli’s movies, especially the operas. I once watched a screening of Joseph Losey’s Don Giovanni: set and filmed in Venice, with what looks like a substantially Italian cast and crew, is this French/Italian/German co-production classifiable as Italian? I have only watched on television Sergio Leone’s part-Italian part-American ‘spaghetti westerns’ such as For a Fistful of Dollars, For a few Dollars More and A Fistful of Dynamite.

Cinema Paradiso (the Director's Cut is richer) and Chaos (a film based on the stories of Pirandello); The Icicle Thief. I feel ashamed that I have not yet watched The Bicycle Thief. I recall watching 1900 and finding it very long - maybe if I were to watch it again I might appreciate it more.

 Spain

El Espiritu de la Colmena.

 Brazil

O Beijo da Mulher Aranha (Kiss of the Spider Woman), starring William Hurt. Central Station (on television).
