Residents of South East Cornwall are being encouraged towards a different kind of Christmas tree.
Stara Woods is offering gift givers the chance to
sponsor new saplings in the woods or adopt mature trees this Christmas.
Environmentally friendly shoppers can choose from native trees like oak, birch,
holly, ash and sweet chestnut,
or else a more traditional Christmas tree in the form of douglas fir or
Anne Hughes, founder of the Friends of Stara Woods, said: "Community woodland trees make a [wonderful] living present that goes on giving year after year. They provide vital habitat for woodland animals [such as] dormice, otters and bats, as well as creating a tranquil green space for human visitors to enjoy."
According to Councillor John Yaxley, Environment and Recreation portfolio holder on Caradon District Council, "The trees local people sponsor this Christmas aren't just presents for this year but also for the future. Instead of heading for the compost heap after the holidays, these very special Christmas trees will provide pleasure for your children and grandchildren for years to come."
Gift givers have the choice of supporting the woodland by sponsoring a new sapling for £2 or adopting a mature tree for £3. Every order will include a certificate for each tree sponsored or adopted, a map of where to find Stara Woods and details of the public footpaths, information about the woods and the Friends of Stara Woods plus an open invitation to visit, enjoy and get involved in the community woodland.
