Spain: Introduction
[This section is in the earliest
stages of development: 6 April 1999]

To date I have visited Spain
twice: in 1983 and 1999.
The first time, I caught the overnight train from Paris,
sleeping in a couchette. I awoke in Madrid.
I was in Madrid for only a few
hours. My impression was of a hot, dusty, bustling city. On the return passage
through Madrid's Chamartin railway station, I was
frightened when some police officers started waving their guns around in order
to break up a heated dispute about seat reservations in the railway compartment. When I next visit Madrid, it will be to visit
the Prado gallery, and the Thyssen
Bornemiszta gallery (particularly for its German
Expressionist collection).
The second time, I flew from Birmingham
to Barcelona.
