Researching the Bywaters family tree has lead
to connections with other families, below shows how the Bywaters and Noaks
connection is made when two sisters Constance and Dorothy Noaks married
two brothers Edward and Albert Bywaters.
During our research we discovered the unmarked
grave of Dorothy Bywaters, (née Noaks), at Green Lane Cemetery,
Addlestone, Surrey. Records show she had died from cancer on 4th March
1932, aged 43, at the Princess Mary's Village Home For Girls where she
was a teacher. Following the death of her son Peter, my grandfather, 66
years later in 1998, his ashes were buried in his mother's grave which
now has a headstone in memory of Dorothy and her son.
The Noaks family has been traced back to the early 1500's and living in Sussex. The name was originally Anoke, which eventually became Noakes, but one branch of the family that moved from Ticehurst, Sussex to Cheam, Surrey and then settled in neighbouring Sutton, in the same county spelt their name Noaks. The Noaks' were a farming family and owned their own land. Two of the family secured their own place in local history. The son of John Noaks (born 1781) also called John, born 1814, became owner of the Cheam Brewery. And Lucy Noaks who married William Killick and lived at Whitehall*, Cheam had a son, James, who became captain of the tea clipper Challenger . James Killick later became a ship owner and shipping agent creating the company Killick, Martin & Co which still exists today.
*Whitehall is now a local museum administered by the London Borough of Sutton
Whitehall circa 1500 - a grade 11 listed builidng
