This morning, under the heading “El autismo y el dogmatism de la ciencia economica” (“Autism and dogmatism of economic science”), Expansion, Spain’s leading financial and “neoclassical oriented” newspaper, launched an attack on the post-autistic economics movement.  The article coincided with the appearance of Jean-Paul Fitoussi  (the economist heading the French government’s inquiry into the economics curriculum) in a public forum in Madrid.  After the event Fitoussi met with students regarding the pae movement.

Jean-Paul Fitoussi, the eminence appointed by the French government to investigate and recommend changes in the economics curriculum, will on January 24th take part in a roundtable in Madrid on the post-autistic economics movement and the need for reforming economics teaching. Fitoussi will be joined by Joaquin Estefania and Gabriel Tortella.  The event symbolizes the growing influence in Spain of the A.e.e., the student organization leading the Spanish pae movement.  For further details, see the announcements section below.

Eonomists teach us "to believe that abstract economic theory is more important than the real world," argues Andrew Simms in The Independent, a UK daily. This intellectual autism is "blinding the world's decision-makers to the reality of imminent environmental collapse." As a force against this escapism, it is noted, there has recently appeared the post-autistic economics movement. France: In today's Le Monde, an essay by Jean Gadrey argues that, given its well-known falsity, "Most of neoclassical microeconomics should be taught as part of the history of economic thought, along side, for example, the Marxist theory of labor value, and removed from the foundational curriculum. A substantial part of formalized macroeconomics should suffer the same fate." The current post-autistic initiatives, he says, are the only hope for restraining economics' suicidal behavior.
