    In his youth and early married years Albert was involved with the Beeston Boys Brigade and Beeston Lad`s Club.  Also Rylands Mission Beeston.  The Mission hall was on the canal waterfront next to the Jolly Anglers public house.  It was established in the 1890s largely as a result of the efforts of a Miss Barker the daughter of a former lock keeper and closed in 1956 - later houses were erected on this site.

    Extract from `The Beeston & West Notts Gazette` issue June 4th 1910 re The Beeston Boys Brigade annual inspection. ` No 1 Squad won the award for best attendance at drills (91.94%).  Corporal
    A Birch the squad leader received the award on its behalf. `

    He was involved with the founding of the Salvation Army in Beeston becoming a life long bandsman at Ilkeston and Stapleford Corps.
