The marriage entry in the copy of Smalley Parish register as follows ...

John Bannister (Beniston - this was a comment added later) of Smalley and Ann Alton of the same parish were married in this chapel by Banns this fourteenth day of August 1808 by me John Clarke, officiating minister, signed by John Beniston and Ann Alton, in the presence of Christopher Oldknow (by his mark) and James Rogers.

In 1841 census at Heanor the surname appears as Beneston.
