Bulletin
Board -
Essential Information
The
Bulletin Board aims, like other SIG services, to use the knowledge of
SIG members for the benefit
of other members:
1) For
sale / wanted - do you have anything from your travels which could
be useful to fellow members (e.g. travel guide, dictionary, phrasebook
etc.)? Or are you looking for something in particular to do with travel?
Let us know.
2) Information
required - Are you thinking of going somewhere for your next holiday,
but would like more information than you can find in the brochures and
tour operator websites? Contact us with the details of your query and
we'll post it here.
3) Travelling
companion sought - Would you consider sharing a travel experience
or holiday with a fellow SIG member? Let us know your preferred destination(s)
or itinerary, preferred dates of travel, specific aims or interests (art,
history, railways, food, football, lazing around on a beach, cruise etc.),
personal preferences (non-smoker etc), outline budget / cost per night,
some details about yourself (please be honest!) and any other information
which would be useful for others to know.
4) "SIG
Oracle" - Would you be prepared to share your travel knowledge
and experience, and to act as a contact point for queries on specific
destinations or modes of travel? Let us know your area of knowledge and
expertise and also how you have derived that knowledge (e.g. have you
been to a specific country every year for the past decade? do you live
in the destination in question? etc.)
Whichever
category above you are responding to, complete and return the relevant
section(s) of our form,
stating your name and Mensa membership number. Responses to messages will
be channeled throught the webmaster. Please bear in mind that this website
is not password-protected and hence is open to other Mensa members and
potentially to non-Mensa members.
We look forward
to posting your messages!
Please
note that TravelSIG, its officers and British Mensa cannot be responsible
for the quality or accuracy of any information supplied through this service
or displayed on the Bulletin Board, nor for any consequences which may
arise from action based on such information. We reserve the right
to edit or not to publish notices submitted. Any exchanges of articles,
cash etc. are between the individuals concerned. TravelSIG, British Mensa
and its officers are not involved in such transactions, so "caveat
emptor"! While responses to enquiries of offers of information
will be channeled through the webmaster, it is up to the original enquirer
or offerer of information to contact the respondent(s).

FOR
SALE - Pocket Travellers Guides |
| Message: |
Some
time ago, I ordered a set of Pocket Traveller Guides from the US,
which are actually a laminated fold-out guide on wildlife generally,
and I ended up with two orders. I therefore have a spare set of
these fold-out guides, which work out at £7.50 each with postage.
I didn't send them back as I think they are nifty for people who
only have a general interest, and don't want to buy a book on birds
etc. The titles I have are:
Galapagos Wildlife
African Birds
African Wildlife
African Animal Tracks
The Night Sky
Geology

I
am planning a tour of Japan. As you can imagine the costs are high
so I want to choose a good tour company!! I am provisionally thinking
of CTS Horizons (China travel service) who do a good tour called
The Chrysanthemum and the Sword. Has anyone travelled with CTS and
if so do you have any comments? Would you reccommend them?
Has anyone been to Japan with another tour company which they would
reccommend? Any responses would be much appreciated.

Oslo,
Norway |
| Message: |
Some
things to see in Oslo include:
- Akershus
Fortress. A good place for views of the fjord, it also houses
the Resistance Museum.
- Eidvolls
Plass. A pleasant public park in central Oslo near to open-air
cafes.
- The
Folk Museum on Bigdoy Island. About
170 typical historical and regional buildings have been rescued
and placed in this interesting outdoor museum. Easy access by
bus or ferry.
- Also
on Bigdoy are the Kon Tiki Museum; the Fram Museum (polar exploration)
and the Viking Ship Museum where you can see the preserved
Gokstad Ship, excavated 1880.
- Oslo's
main shopping and strolling street is Karl Johans Gate,
leading from the Cathedral to the Royal Palace. This is the view
looking back when you get there.
- The
Vigeland Sculpture Park, home to the
works of Gustav Vigeland (1869 - 1943).
The
above are among the main sights of Oslo and any weekend visitor
will find them easily. We thought Oslo was a very pleasant city
without being outstanding in the same way that London, Paris or
Rome would be. We had some truly awesome hotel breakfasts, but eating
out is very pricey eg the cost of 2 pizzas and 2 glasses of wine
or 2 burgers and beers at a central café or bar is about
£40!
Near
the central station it's also wise to be on the lookout for pick-pockets,
beggars, drunks, drug addicts and other unsavoury characters. The
other hazard is cyclists and roller-bladers who whizz up very fast
behind you on the pavements when you're least expecting them!
Hope
this is of some use to anyone planning to visit Oslo. There's a
very good rail connection between the airport and the city and it's
easy to use, so there's no need to get a taxi.

Puerto
Vallarta, Mexico |
| Message: |
After
Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta is probably Mexico's leading Pacific Coast
resort. It has little history, with the majority of its growth having
occurred since the 1950s.The town's chief claim to fame is that it
was the home to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton for a short while.
Their home, Casa Kimberley, is now open as a museum (entrance 80 Mexican
Pesos or US$8.00, including guided tour, as at December 2002). For
anyone tempted by the prospect of sleeping in the same bedroom as
Ms Taylor, Casa Kimberley offers bed-and-breakfast. A welcome change
from the majority of the town's accommodation (modern hotels, 'condominiums'
and resort complexes), even if Ms Taylor has now moved on.
Prices
on request from the current proprietor. Tel/fax +52 322 222 1336

I'll
try to answer any reasonable questions, my knowledge of the area
is limited at this time, the aim is to improve it and experience
it. The aim of having a travelling companion is to share both the
enjoyment and enpense. I see travel as part of life's adventurous
journey, not just a means to a destination!
