In addition to VISA, TravelSIG organises special events enabling members to meet and to enjoy lectures on travel-related themes. From time to time, we also publicise other events organised by members, such as the Jersey Weekend, and other SIG initiatives or news.

SIG member John Keeble organised an excellent day of exploration in the historic city of Cambridge for Saturday 20 October. Highlights included St John's College, a travel exhibition at Cambridge University Library, the Eagle pub (haunt of DNA discoverers Crick and Watson), King's College chapel and a Blue Badge guided tour. Thanks to John and June Keeble and their Cambridge contacts - John Wells at Cambridge University Library, Peter and Daphne at The Eagle and the two Blue Badge guides.

SIG newsletter wins awards at Diamond AG

Awards for TravelSIG's newsletter

Barry writes: "At the Diamond Gathering in Nottingham in 2006, I was delighted to receive two awards for VISA, based on the decision of a panel of judges who had examined no fewer than 65 SIG newsletters. We took the Winner’s award for SIG Newsletter Design, Layout and Presentation, and the Highly Commended award for Content and Interaction.

"The judges commented that VISA is '…one of the best-written of all the SIG (newsletters), nice articles, plenty of information and advice and interaction.' It has a 'strong and attractive look with good use of the colour pages. Good use of pictures and the white space bled into the margins creates a nice open feel, there is also very strong signposting to individual articles...There's more to this newsletter than travellers tales and pictures. It has those in good measure but also includes interesting advice and opinion articles, news and surveys. There is good member interaction, involvement, recognition and acknowledgement.'

"In receiving these prestigious awards, I want to pay tribute to those who work hard to make VISA possible. These include Sara Zaffino and the staff at Mensa Head Office who are responsible for the not very glamorous but necessary tasks of printing, binding and despatching the newsletter.

"As Editor, Neil Matthews’ enthusiasm, diligence and creative skills contribute so much to making VISA so visually appealing. The design award was won for the newsletter design in use up to issue 67. We have recently enhanced the layout and design to make it even better.

"The biggest thanks must go to you, the membership of Travel SIG. If it were not for your own enthusiasm for the subject matter and willingness to contribute to the newsletter, our efforts would be in vain."
