This chapter contains 186 Cardiff (and
environs) wills, mostly abstracts.
Spelling is as written, no attempt has been made to modernise, or correct.
For example, Dauid = David; Ruse = Roose; Rothe = Roath; etc., but the former
spellings are used.
Many references to people in the wills are by christian name only, e.g.
"son David". It would be an easy matter to surmise the surname
based on the surname of the testator. However, in Wales during this period,
the system of naming was often patronymic, so "David son of John LEWIS"
may be named "David ap JOHN", "David JOHN" or "David
LEWIS". The family information given in the wills has been used to
supply the most appropriate surname, where necessary. However, I am not
infallible (but I do my best!), so you should be prepared to look at other
possible surnames.
Note: "overseer" means "overseer of the will", and not
any other kind of overseer.
Firstly, all 186 wills are listed in chronological order. The information
is in 5 columns:
Column 1 :- will number
Column 2 :- surname of testator
Column 3 :- christian names of testator
Column 4 :- year that the will was written
Column 5 :- short description of testator
You may like to look at the second part first
if you are looking for a surname.

Secondly, all 997 individuals mentioned in
the wills (including testators) are listed in alphabetical order of surname.
The information is in 5 columns:
Column 1 :- surname of individual
Column 2 :- christian names of individual
Column 3 :- year that the will was written
Column 4 :- will number (see above)
Column 5 :- short description of individual (where just a family relationship
is given, the relationship is with the testator)
A quick example - If you see the following line:
JAMES Ann 1777 184 daughter
Then, Ann JAMES is named in a 1777 will (will 184) as a daughter. Will
184 (above) is the will of William JAMES, a shopkeeper from Whitchurch.
Ann is therefore the daughter of this William.
